Businesses react to four-day week plans under new government

Businesses have reacted to new proposals which offer flexible working hours, including a four-day week, under new government plans.

To receive their full pay, employees would still have to work their full hours but compressed into a shorter working week - something some workplaces already do.

It is understood deputy prime minister Angela Rayner is behind the move and wants to introduce legislation on it this autumn after consulting with unions and businesses.

It would be nice if public sector workers didn’t have to squeeze a 9 day working week into 7 days…

Wow, lying about what is meant by '4-day working week' is what they're doing now? And Sky is joining in.

Anyone who has offices outside of the UK best get ready for layoffs.
All this will do is force your employer to move your role to another office, good job Labour👍

I hope that these corporations will no longer succeed in tricking young people into postponing their lives for 30 years, as they did with their parents, who reached retirement on crutches, and sacrifices for what

The fact peoples negative response to this is "because i said so" and the nonsense the dude in the video said, it shows its just greed
The only people mad are those who cant abuse their workers time as much.

More people running cash in hand side hustles in their spare time, and hiding it from the tax man. Bit like politicians and doctors et al

Why is government determining this? Not their business

Id love a world where a group of people would work 4 days a week and another group works the other 3

Won’t the business know how to make their employees more productive than a few labour MPs who think they know all ? The push should come from the business rather than government forcing it

The UK already has flexible working hours and the ability to work four-days a called "part-time employment"

It would soon turn back into a 5 day week, but at 10 hours a day instead of 8.

5 days work done in 4 days will be ideal for businesses that don't do direct customer contact but for those that do well they will do whatever is practically possible. It is the same as businesses offering part time work and scheduling the work around workin hours. Today with many people working from home it is worth looking at cultural changes and solutions.

I think a 4 day working week may work for some industries but it might not be transferable to all industries, it seems perhaps more suited for office work and stuff like that

Companies will look for remote/off shore workers where possible so it not such a good idea. My business would look to outsource and make redundancies if they don’t have workers doing the pre Covid mon-fri 9-5. The plans would need see redundancies being harder to do, same for termination on performance grounds.

If the force can get as much done in a compressed x 4 day week then what's the problem, any affected company doesn't have to also open on a fifth/sixth day, unless they're going to pay time/t&half.
