Yesterwynde (2024)
Tenth album from symphonic metal masters Nightwish entitled "Yesterwynde" released by Nuclear blast.
One surprising thing about this new album is the absence of a catchy single like "Noise", "Storytime", "Nemo"....
The group announced that it would not tour to promote this album and we were therefore waiting for an effective record in return.
One thing is certain, composer Tuomas Holopainen put his soul into this ambitious and personal record.
After a nice intro comes the excellent "An ocean of strange islands" which is rhythmic, catchy with a Floor Jansen in great shape!
Good news, the guitars are back, left a little absent on the previous disc.
The orchestrations of the pieces as well as the structures remind me of the "Dark passion play" era.
This album gives the impression of having been composed like music for a big show film (and it's successful) with different chapters.
Floor Jansen sings in a less lyrical way although there are passages of this type at times.
There are 4 calmer ballad-type pieces which allow you to listen to the disc in a lighter way.
We have the impression of having already heard certain Nightwish-style vocal lines or melodies on previous opuses.
In summary, despite some criticism, we can observe a very good Nightwish album with beautiful orchestrations and highlighted guitars as well as Floor Jansen in better shape than ever.
But in any case, there will undoubtedly be songs that will delight fans.
Finally, what a shame that Nightwish has paused its tours for the moment, because we can't wait to discover some of the songs from this new opus live.
