The "tumble" was normal. The 1st stage performs a "tumble fire rotation" that causes this on purpose. Upper stage gets a kick-away from first stage during separation on purpose due to the fact that it's not a full-up stage yet (no engine to pull away from sep)

Man... If only Constellation had actually happened... It would have been awesome (if expensive).

It's a pity NASA didn't do the follow on Aries I-Y test as it would've included a high-altitude abort test of the Orion's LAS.

I was watching NASA TV as well. How did you get the HD quality, though?

The real deal will have ullage motors to "kick" the 2nd stage away from the first and to also help settle the propellants in the tanks for J2X ignition.

Watch an old Saturn V lauch for a primer on staging.

@basvg1 Okay, thanks. So much chaos since the 'big announcement' last year and I lost track. I like this new design.

They should have said, "...3, 2, 1, blastoff!!" like in 1950s rocket movies.

Ive seen "tower avoidance maneuvers" before but Hard to believe that was only from a 1 deg gibale of the SRB nozzle.

ALso the tower at 39B is burnt toast. They should call it the "maximise tower damage maneuver"

Is there a date for the next test launch? I know that a bunch of ideas are still on the table.

I think the employee version of NASA TV online was done in HD.

Long range trackers. Basically a telescope with a camera.

Liberty will fly a lot sooner than SLS. SLS is more expensive than the Ares I or the Ares V, has less lifting capacity than the Saturn V (the Ares V could lift up to almost twice as much as the Saturn V), and the SLS has nowhere to go. At earliest it could take people to lunar flybys in the 2020s. Ares I would have gotten off the ground by 2017 according to the Augustine Commission, even without an increase in funding.

Falcon 9 and Atlas 5 also rely on govt funds. Don't forget that.

@rss0246 No worries. Falcon 9 and the Dragon Spacecraft are the obvious successor to the shuttle program. Better and cheaper, Musk has done in a few years what NASA could only dream of.

Ya the sec stage was a dummy one. No sep motors on it.
