One of the greatest albums. Just for his fans. No sign of monetizing his art.
Pure hip hop.

This is single handedly Cole's greatest masterpiece. Speaks on Death, life, poverty, riches, pain, healing, and desperation. And that's just one song.

J. Cole rapped his heart out on this song.

"These words are dedicated to you and all the other children, affected by the mass incarceration in this nation/ That sent your pops to prison when he needed education..."

This sh#t is deep.

I'm about to have a daughter and this shit hits me some type of way. Rest in peace to all my niggas who left this earth way to early and won't be able to see their seed grow.

This album dropped in the wrong time, kids were in a totally different mindset 3 years ago. Souncloud was taking off big time, Cole dropped this and it backfired in terms of reaction. I do think when all of these kids grow up and listen to this album in their late 20's and 30's everybody is going to come back and say actually this album was hella good.

It's rare in rap when the beauty of the instrumental matches the beauty of the words. I can listen to this on repeat for hours because i barely notice it's a 9 minute song. All 4 verses keep you compelled.

Edit: My mistake was that James’ first time was 12 and his first juvie sentence was 12, but James was 19 when he had Nina. This is a posthumous track dedicated to James. And the very first word “Hey/Aye Yeah” might have been James’ recorded voice before he died.
Then the rest of the lyrics was rapped by J. Cole giving both perspectives.

Let me explain this song since it’s so profound on emotion and perspective:
From the beginning to 6:10, J Cole impersonated the personal life of his close friend, James McMillan, from his childhood (losing his father at 8, working a "family store" (drug business within the family), losing money, so got caught stealing money at 12, had a baby at 19 years old with two felonies by age 19).

At 6:10, it’s fair to assume James is between 19-22 years old when he has a talk with J Cole. J Cole now talks as himself and his reactions with this deep talk with James. He also quotes James statements while he was alive. James sees his death coming soon, and tells J Cole to take his track record and create it for his daughter, Nina. Nina is Jame’s daughter, not J Cole’s.

We then have J Cole return to James that raps his short skit of his life for his daughter because James told J Cole to produce this part if he dies. (James was killed, aged 22) and as he finishes rapping he brags about his pride of being a true nigga (true man) by saying he’s proud to be the father of his daughter, Nina.

That’s what the track is about and it emotionally hit me when I hear it over and over...
