In this fast and simple tutorial, I go over how to apply two (or more) materials to a single object.

Let me know in the comments if you liked the video or have suggestions for future tutorial ideas!

This is the basic way and it’s very useful. If you want more control, learn texture painting. You can “paint” a mask where you want one material over another

Holy moly. This is a lifesaver!
I'm a game developer and this is critical for environments. Always wondered how to do it but never found out until now!
Thanks!

Thanks so much! I always thought I was the only person that ran into this issue. Instead of separating one item into two and adding separate textures, I can know add separate textures to one item🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Thanks, very helpful! sometimes is cool to paint some individual faces in lowpoly things, for illustrations or just to have fun!, I use to do it with other 3D software... And today I've learned with cycles! thanks Derek :)

but is there a way to make a smooth transition? is there a way to load the materials into the node editor and than make for example a gradient?

So is it possible to make them fade into each other like a gradient?

ah darn, this is helpful for some situations, but I was hoping for a gradual change from one to the other. Good video, just not what I'm looking for :)

hey the tutorial seems really good but I'm struggling to duplicate the material in the current blender 2.82. looks like the option to duplicate material is missing from the interface or been changed to something else?
some help would be really appreciated

Is there a way to make the transition from one material to the other smoother?

Why do my textures freak out in the viewport when I do this? one of my materials is fine, but the second material produced some strange geometry when I assigned it. Lots of holes and broken geometry, v. confusing to look at, but it seems to render fine still.
