There's more to the Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) story. He saved Ulysses Grant from making a really bad book deal with another publisher and offered to publish it for him and gave him a much better deal that was more profitable for Grant.

Grant's memoir is still the best presidential memoir ever written. I used to visit his tomb on 122nd Street and Riverside Drive when I lived in Manhattan, New York

Grant was an underrated President. A victim of the propaganda of his rivals, mostly in the south who hated that he brought the hammer down on the klan.

Grant had a tendency to be very loyal and therefore naive. Sad it sank his fortune and while as president he appointed people who took advantage of that.

Fun Fact: Mark Twain was born Samuel Langhorne Clemens on this day, November 30, in 1835, and is considered the 'Father of American Literature'. Happy 189th birthday!!!

Imagine going through a Civil War and being a hero and then becoming the president and then making a bad investment thinking that you screwed up your legacy and the wealth potential for your family. And then late in the fourth quarter being able to tell your story and being able to redeem yourself and leave something for your family.I imagine seven days of absolute bliss and then he was ready to go home

Back story on Origin of Samuel Clemens pen name - On RIVER BOATS big Paddle wheelers - they need a certain clearance to operate safely & Boat men with LONG POLES when depth was GOOD - would shout MARK TWAIN indicating 20+feet of water depth so paddle wheels could operate safely.
Clemens wanted to known as a writer with DEPTH so he took that Slang Boatsmens phrase adopted it as his pen name - using the metaphor of MARK TWAIN to indicate he had DEPTH as a writer.

Everyone knows that Mark Twain was born Samuel Clemens, but did you know Ulysses S. Grants birth name?
Hyrum Ulysses Grant.
He was registered at West Point under his famous name. Some say it was his father and others say it was his sponsor that did the name change. It's said that the change to U.S. Grant was to increase his chances of being accepted into West Point Military Academy.
