Disneyland is known as the happiest place on earth. It was Walt Disneys dream and It was achieved, but it hasn’t happened without a few dark tragedies, none more infamous than the death of Debbie Stone in 1974.

Deborah Gail Stone, the first child of Bill and Marilyn Stone, was born in Santa Ana, California, on June 18, 1956. Growing up, Debbie was friendly, popular and excelled in both academics and athletics, particularly track and swimming.

It was the 8th of July 1974 and Debbie had just started her evening shift. It was around 10.30pm as the last show was coming to a close when Debbie’s co-workers heard a blood curdling scream coming from the theatre. Operators rushed to the scene, to find Debbie’s body crushed between the walls of the theatre. No one knows exactly what went wrong on that fateful night, but there have been theories. She may have tripped, taken a step backwards, or attempted to leap from one stage to the next but one thing was clear, Debbie was dead and died a quick but agonising death.

Beautifully done. My dad worked at Disneyland when this happened. He told me about it when I was a teen. He said that her hair was caught
in between the walls and after this happened staff had to wear their hair tied back and they had to sit away from the moving walls as the show
was in progress. Also he said that the employees and guest's could hear a voice saying be careful before and after the show..

To me, an accident such as this in a place with moving walls and rotating stages was inevitable, especially back in those days where Health & Safety was nothing like it is today.
She would have been 65 today.

Well done. I remember Debbie she was in a couple of my classes at SAHS. She was smart and a person who had high hopes in life. So sad she left us so tragically and so young in her life.

A little context for confused younger people. College students used to be able to pay their tuition by getting a regular job. My stepdad for example went to college in the late 60s and paid for it all as he went washing dishes at a restaurant. Now washing dishes all semester wouldn't cover your textbooks nevermind tuition.

Excellent work man, not just in covering the tragedy, but more importantly in elaborating on how much of an impact Debbie made on people during her short life...may she rest in peace.

this is an incredibly respectful covering of what happened to debbie, thank you for focusing more on the person she was and not relying on shock value like most youtubers would

I worked at Disney World in the 1980s. I heard this story then from a coworker. I wasn't sure if it was true of not.
But there was a death that happened at the park while I was working there. This was before the internet so it was easy to keep things under wraps if you didnt want it to become news so the story comes from what all the employees were saying that day. It happened on Lake Buena Vista, the large manmade lake that sits in front of the park. There were two hotels back then that sat on the shore of the lake, The Contemporary Resort and The Polynesian Village. Both hotels featured small motor boats you could rent and speed around the lake. In addition, there was a large paddle wheel ferry that carried patrons across the lake from the parking area up to the entrance.
The little motor boats, called Sprites, were free to go anywhere in the lake . One day a woman and a young child were in a Sprite when the motor stalled while the small boat was in the path of the ferry. The woman tried to restart the boat frantically pulling on the start cord while the young child jumped off and swam away. It is assumed that the woman must have tried to jump away but the ferry was too close for her to be able to swim out of its path. The Sprite and the woman frantically pulling the cord disappeared from the view of the wheel house and the chopped up pieces of the Sprite came out from behind the ferry. There was no sign of the woman. They searched the lake for hours and could not locate her. Only after the ferry was taken to the maintenance dock and lifted out of the water was her body found lodged under the boat.
This happened in either 1988 or 89 and to this day I've never heard or read an official version of this story. Just what everybody was saying that day had happened in another area of the park. Disney is full of legends and tales told by employees to each other that get handed down from one summer crew to the next but this actually happened the day I was there working. Supposedly.
I know from having lived there that the local media was very kind to Disney and seldom reported any negatives stories. Times have changed.

This story never gets easier. I went to middle school with Debbie’s younger brother. It was years ago but I still remember the hush around the school and story. I’ve been on the ride many times like most OC kids growing up in the 70’s and 80’s. I always thought about her when on the attraction. As a mother myself now with children older than Debbie when she was killed, I can’t imagine what her parents and family went through.
Thank you for telling her story.

I literally cannot imagine the absolute terror she must have felt in her last moments, realizing that the wall just... wasnt going to stop. All I can say is that I hope she didn't suffer any more than that

Just tragic. I was told about this during my first trip to Disneyland in 2012. I was in the building where the attraction used to be. I felt sad for Debbie. It felt creepy to be there walking along what I believe was where the old track was. I still feel sad and bothered by this. Thanks for sharing what a wonderful person Debbie was!

This was a great video, and I am sure Debbie's parents would be thankful. I knew Debbie well. She and I were friends in High School. We used to go watch her at Disneyland and have so much fun together. Many of my friends worked at Disneyland when we were all so young and Debbie's death was really hard on everyone that knew her. Thank you for the very kind video with such respect for her. R.I.P. Deb, we still remember and miss you.

My older brother had a really good friend who worked at Disneyland, when he got off work he could cross the freeway to get home, one morning we got a phone call from his mother telling us that he had been run over several times on the freeway the night before, he was a sweet gentle boy our family loved him very much his name was Chuck Ream, this was many .many years ago but I still remember his handsome face, his name was Chuck Ream, I dedicate this to him and all those who have lost their lives at such a young age and so tragically .

She was born and graduated from high school the same year as my late mother. I couldn't imagine losing a child just as they were beginning to go out into the world. That poor family.

I was a ride operator working on another attraction at DL the day this happened. I did not know something was wrong at America Sings until I ended my shift and was walking to the locker room backstage to change. My normal route that went past America Sings was blocked by numerous management and security were standing around the outer perimeter of the circular attraction. I didn't learn what happened until I heard about the accident on my car radio. Several years later, I worked with a former America Sings ride operator who was among the first to enter the theater where Debbie was supposed to be. She found the theater section without a ride operator at the welcome position where the microphone was. Tragically, it was soon discovered that Debbie was supposed to be standing there but was unaccounted for. The attraction immediately halted operations and all guests were escorted from the various theater sections. Rest in peace, Debbie, from a fellow ride operator working at DL that day.

My brother died that same year. He was 15 and we were two months into grieving his loss at the time this happened. Seems so long ago now, so it's nice to see this young woman remembered like this all these years later.

You are very much correct, there is no greater loss than the loss of a child. My son died in a car crash at 17 years old just 6 weeks n 4 days after his father died in his sleep. 2006 was a blur.

The problem was where she was standing. For Carousel of Progress, standing on the left made sense. But when they reversed the spinning, they should've moved the host to the right side. At worst, the rotating stage would've bumped a person, rather than crushing them.

Unbelievably tragic. 😔

Someone really needs to show models of what happened. I’ve read it over and over but it’s impossible to picture what happened without seeing the walls and how they were revolving
