PS5 vs. Xbox Storage Upgrade

Both consoles CAN support a M.2 storage upgrade... but let's see if someone with LOTS of tech experience can upgrade an Xbox faster than a regular user can upgrade a PS5!

Don’t try this at home on your Xbox unless you really know what you’re doing! You can’t just upgrade the internal SSD or the console will no longer work. You need to clone the contents of the old SSD first, and even then I think it needs to be an identical model for the console to even recognize it. Thanks Microsoft.

The worst part about the Xbox expansion packs is they’re just a normal SSD connected via CompactFlash Express. There’s no reason it needs to be as locked down as it is other than greed.

Fun fact, you cant just plop in a 2230 either. Theyre encrypted or some sh*t evidently, so your forced to use a replacement nvme from microsoft, even if you had an extra exact 2230 thats already installed.

Last I knew, you can't change the internal m.2 ssd on the XSX and it actually work/boot up. Microsoft has thier proprietary software on the internal SSD that can't be cloned over to ANY other m.2 SSD, no matter if it's short or not.

Microsoft really fucked up with their overpriced memory expansion cards. It's what sank the vita and it's a pretty big inconvenience compared to the PS5. You're better off getting an external drive for way cheaper and running xbox one games off of that as well as swapping series games back and forth.

I got my 1TB expansion card from Walmart for half off because an employee put the 1TB version in the 500GB version slot. So they had to honor their prices and gave me the 1TB version for the price of a 500GB version.

Xbox's expanded storage slot was a great thing for Xbox in the short term because at the launch of the next gen consoles M.2 SSD's were more expensive than Xbox's expanded storage drives but now that M.2 SSD's are becoming more affordable Sony's got the lead here and unfortunately the price for Xbox's expanded storage likely wont change much because there is no competition so no reason to lower prices.

I know it’s just a short. but it’s an odd comparison. You’re noting that on the PS5 she’s just adding additional storage and not replacing the main storage, while on the XBox Series X he’s trying to replace the main storage. I think for comparing storage expansion between the two it’d be more like you can upgrade faster with the expansion modules (which are basically NVME drives in a case) or spend almost half as much (with a little more work) to add additional storage to the PS5.

And in the long term the PS5 compatible storage will get cheaper and/or better, where you can really say that about the XBox expansion as you don’t really know what kind of drive is really in that case.
