Umm... Poseidon gifted Athens a salt water spring, not horses. He created horses as part of a wager with Demeter for her hand as she was searching for Persephone and in doing so became so infatuated with his own creations that Demeter was able to slip away and continue her search for her daughter (who was taken by Hades with permission from Zeus.)

I thought Medusa gave birth to the Pegasus and then when Perseus cuts off Medusa's head the Pegasus emerges fully grown

Lol, how is it that a pale Poseidon (PSDN) of ‘Greek’ myth managed to create an animal indigenous to Africa, while carrying a trident which symbolized an African master of the oceans? OMG!

That`s NOT exactly why he is also a god of horses ;-) the ancestors of the Greeks lived in the lowlands before they moving to the sea. Poseidon (he probably had a different name back then) was a horse god to these people, because horses were their means of transportation. Then when they lived by the sea, shipping became very important to the Greeks. Thus, an original horse god became ALSO a sea god.

He also has a horse son with Demeter, brother of Despoina, goddess of the winter.

Poseidon was God of horses for centuries before the proto Greeks came to Greece. The Myceneans, as they were called, were superb horsemen and charioteers. After the Santorini volcano exploded, destroying the Creetan fleet, the Myceneans became dominant in the area we think of as Greece.
So why did they assign the sea god functions to their god of horses and earthquakes?

1). The sounds of the sea might remind them of hundreds of running hooves as well as earthquakes.

2) Both horses and the sea will carry you swiftly, and if you watch surf rushing to the beach long enough, it can suggest a herd of white horses.
