You know youre out of touch when 1000 for a single flight dosent sound bad at all
Edit: to all those saying a trip overseas is $1000, you are getting scammed cuz literally the first flight i found when i googled new york -> berlin is 200€.
$1000 is out of touch and yall can not deny it

I don't think this fully answers the question though. It isn't just the raw dollar value but the relative price difference between economy and business that cause people to wonder this. Yes, $800 can sometimes get you a business class seat. However, the price for economy on the same flight would be a fraction of that price, with business class being multiple times the price for economy, with no real option between the two products.

how to pay less money for flights:
step 1: have more money

It's four times the economy fare, so yes, it is as expensive as I thought. I frequently travel LHR-SYD, so this is a significant extra cost.

I remember when I was around 8 years old I was travelling to Africa (Tanzania) to see some of my family members. It was a flight from London to Dubai on Emirates A380. I felt sick and told cabin crew (I was travelling alone). They brought me upstairs to first class and gave me medicine. Still didnt work. They knew it was legit so they kept me there for whole flight. Once we landed in Dubai, someone from the aiport brought me to Doc to get it checked up. I felt fine and so I went back to my gate (obv with someone to guide me there cause I was 8). The next flight was from Dubai to Dar Es Salaam. Turns out they let me go on first class again for free because of what I experienced last flight. It was on Emirates boeing 777. One of the cabin crew treated me like a mom there lol. She forced me to eat (in a good way) since i hadnt eaten in 24hrs. She told me if i didnt then im back to economy. Thank goodness i ate it lol. I will never forget this experince and I will forever love Emirates!!!

No way you pay $900 total for business across the all costs including miles value)

What you haven’t mentioned is that you’re using points from loyalty programs which reduces your ticket price to $800 :/

As a pilot… first class passengers deserve most of the credit, because those expensive tickets pay for everyone else’s cheaper airfare. They pay for the majority of the costs to keep the aircraft flying… a different perspective, but it is the truth. If the costs of the airplane (fuel, maintenance, crew, etc etc) were put onto the economy seats…. There would be no cheap seats. So when you see people sitting in first class or business… thank them for paying for YOU to fly for cheap :) cheers!

I think it really just depends. “Market observation” is key. I paid 2000€ for Singapore Airlines Business from Munich to Singapore and back. Which, for a 12.5 hour direct flight is quite cheap. But I was 100% flexible and booked way in advance. I also feel like that flying from Europe eastwards is often a lot cheaper than any connections to the states (at least in premium classes).

Last year, I bought an open jaw Chicago to London, Paris to Chicago, business class on Icelandair, for under $900.
The flight back from Keflavik to Chicago was canceled due to weather so they rebooked me in the much nicer Air France business class!

I was monitoring flights between San Diego and Queenstown, New Zealand (via SFO and AKL) for later this year (October), and business class prices were consistently in the $9, 500-$10, 200 USD for the round trip. Air New Zealand did have a sale at the start of May that dropped the total price to $7, 900. 😮 Ouch!

$800? You can't even get an economy flight for that.

Wish UK banks would give airmiles away as easily as their American counterparts. If you want the lifestyle of these influencers you need to churn US cards for signup bonuses.

In my experience if you book 5-6 month in advance for 5-13h flights you don’t get anything below 2-3k per person so 800-900 is a dream state, for flights from Germany to Asia Oder Africa or America business class… at the moment even more expensive with emirates or Qatar at around 3-4 or easily higher up to 8k regarding the route and airline

I don't think many people would stump up the cash to pay these prices from private funds. Corporate for sure makes up 95% unless you're using miles and unfortunately few Europeans get the credit card points American's do. Economy plus is all i could justify and even that only on 6 hour plus flights.

Very true Dan! Biz Class isn’t unachievable for those of us who can travel semi regularly and have loyalty programs with airlines or their alliances. For example I get loyalty points with Skyteam (Delta) Star Alliance (United) & One World (Alaska & American) here in the USA 🇺🇸 where I live and fly domestically. 😊
