Integrated Livestock: Pastured Poultry & Eggs at Epiphany Farms

Показать описание
In this excerpt from a farm tour filmed June 2018, Epiphany Farms Founder / Owner & CheFarmer Ken Myszka talks about how the animals on our farm are helping us to passively build soil, then he goes on to introduce us to the laying hens and broiler chickens, with their respective housing & systems of care.
Regenerative agriculture aims to have as few inputs as possible; opting instead to utilize the farm's many resources to their fullest extent in ways which emphasize integrated and passive systems. Integrated livestock with intensive pasture rotation is a pivotal way to maximize health of the soil throughout a farm, by moving animals around the property to amend the soil with their waste. This concept was developed and popularized by Joel Salatin at Polyface Farm in Swoope Virginia. We've taken Mr. Salatin's fantastic ideas and developed some of our own mobile coops using simple, inexpensive and / or upcycled materials.
Our laying hens enjoy free roam of the property on a daily basis, scratching & pecking for insects & plants on the pasture in addition to receiving a base non-GMO feed. This increases the spectrum and depth of nutrition they receive far beyond what any CAFO would offer, not to mention the vastly improved quality of life of life on the pasture.
Our broiler chickens also forage plenty of insects & plants from the pasture, as well as being in a more natural state of existence, which overall produces a healthier, more natural quality of meat. None of our animals are given any medications or antibiotics. They receive the highest quality of life and nutrition we can provide, which we are always seeking to increase from season to season as we are able to invest in better systems & feeding regimens.
