Ever wonder what type of beading thread I should use? Does it depend upon what beading project I am making? This video from The Potomac Bead Company discusses some of the various types of beading threads out there, in particular, Fireline, Wildfire, and Nymo. We show you what types of thread are best for different projects, and why some other thread such as sewing thread or fishing line may work for some projects, but may not hold up well over time for others. Enjoy!

2023 Update: Check out our new favorite thread, DragonThread here:

I really appreciate these videos. A few times I've had questions like differences in thread, and there are videos on it. Thank you. You guys are quickly becoming my favorite bead store.

The one difference between the Fireline and the Wildfire is that the Wildfire is thicker even though it is listed the same size. The. 006 Fireline is about half the size and will go through the seed beads many more times.

Just as you've said I've heard that the nymo thread is inferior when bought on bobbins and spools. But is superior when bought sold on the industrial cone sizes. Also; What's wrong with threading using bonded nylon upholstery thread. I get 450 yards for 3 bucks from Hobby Lobby( Sewology brand). Lots of color choices too. Nothing more stressed than upholstered auto seats. Bonded means that the thread is pre coating requiring no waxing or conditioning. There is a more expensive upholstery thread made of spun polyethylene. I think Wildfire and Fireline are both spun polyethylene too.

Which is best for bead necklaces? How does this differ from the 49 wire fron beadalon? Does this knot then put a crimp over it?

Thanks for all the info, Allie--just a small aside, I watched one of your videos when I first started to bead, you were using the green Wildfire, said it worked the best and blended right into most colors of a beading project--you were correct, I have not used any other thread since then.

I appreciate the advice regarding regular fishing line. some videos I have seen tell you just to save money and buy from the sporting goods section at Walmart. It doesn't save if you have to repair. Thank you for this Video.

Hi I want to know what to use for stringing 8mm turquoise beads that I’m using to make a choker style necklace thank you

Fireline is probably the most popular beading thread, but the issue I've run across with Fireline is that with time the beads will cut it. I've sold SEVERAL pieces that have come back to me broken as the pieces are worn and the beads eventually will cut it.

Oh wow. I just used monofilament fishing line on a few beaded rings I made. I didn't know it dry rots. I'm gonna cut them loose and do them over with my 6 or my 8 lb fireline.

Hi, you now also carry Dragon thread. How does that compare to the Wildfire and Fireline?

What options are there for a necklace that only has a few beads in the front? I don’t want to use leather cord because that’s not the look I’m going for and I don’t Want to use chain.
Just a basic necklace with a few beads in the front that I can crimp on. I can’t find any tutorials for this. All I can find is strung necklaces full of beads all the way to the clasp

Thanks for the link to it. I will get some in a couple weeks when I have more money to spare. Cause sometimes black and white just don't look right.

Could you describe what tigertail and C-Lon threads are used for, please? This was helpful, thanks!

When you say fishing line, do you mean the plastic monofilament or the braided fishing line version of of Fireline? I thought that it's similar, but unconditioned. I have some Berkley fishing line I'm thinking of using.

I don't do beading. I just want to hang pieces of crystal near a sunny window to see rainbow effects. What's the best thickness of nylon thread to use?

I just came upon your video and have encountered an issue. I made a shoulder necklace with beaded (sewn) areas between cascading rows of beads. I had started the project with fireline and it snapped on me when I got to the beaded cascading pieces so I bought some wildfire and used that for the rest of the pieces with each cascading row trippled up, knotted and secured with glue. Wore my necklace and it lasted the whole night without snapping but it's stretched out. I did use heavier beads. Any tips on how to deal with or prevent stretching on heavier pieces?
