A friend at high school was experiencing these but we'd never heard about sleep paralysis so we were sure it was some kind of ghost.

One night I was staying over at his place and he asked me to keep an eye on him while he was falling asleep. He asked me to wake him if he started acting oddly. Later when he woke up he said he had had an experience but I hadn't noticed anything unusual.

In cases like these, there needs to be a way to rule out folie à deux, where two or more people share the same hallucinations or delusions. It can happen if the information surrounding the thing they're experiencing, such as the sleep paralysis demon, is not only shared, but then reflected and reinforced by the other participants. If you repeat a sleep paralysis story enough times, even the most sceptical person will start at least considering it might be real. And then its just downhill from there.

I used to suffer with sleep paralysis when I was a child in the 80's. I thought it was a ghost or aliens, i didn't know about sleep paralysis back then, it terrified me, thankfully as I grew up it stopped happening. By the end I knew it wasn't real & could make myself wake up to stop it.
