Have you ever wondered where is the North Korean soldier who risked everything to flee to South Korea? Back In 2017, a North Korean soldier attempted to escape by driving a military vehicle through the heavily guarded border, but it got stuck in a ditch. He then ran across the border while being shot at by his fellow North Korean soldiers. Although he managed to cross the border, he sustained multiple gunshot wounds. As night fell, South Korean troops crawled towards him and dragged him to safety. After fully recovering he appeared on numerous TV shows, briefly becoming a semi-celebrity until he was caught drunk driving.

Fun Fact: He was also drunk on the day when he escaped the North Korean border, and he crossed the border because he feared punishment by higher officials.

When someone risks their life to leave a country, not knowing what to expect on the other side, you know the country he is leaving is really horrible.

He was the son of a general, who probably was killed along with other family members. He also has adult size tape worms.
The son of a general had tape worms!! That should tell you how bad it is there!!

ETA: His name is "Oh Chong Son" if you want to read up on his story! 😶

South Korean has schools for North Korean defectors to help them assimilate into South Korean life. They are given an education that also enables them to join the real world.

I hope he is well now, or gets well. He has been through hell.

I normally am disgusted by DUIs, but no matter what, he will be haunted knowing his entire family for three generations will spend life in labor camps. Likely dying in their early 40s.
And not to mention the kind of stuff he saw is something we can't imagine.
Definitely should never have driven drunk, but in this one case I kind of understand.

To be fair, drinking and driving was probably never a crime in NK so he just never thought anything of it.

Drunk driving is normal in Korea. If you haven't seen a Korean down a bottle of soju from a vending machine and speed off on their car, you haven't been to Korea.
