iPad Pro 2022 (M2 vs M1) - Here We Go Again.

The iPad Pro M2 promises power and headroom... but for what exactly? Sure, there are so many "pro" apps on the App Store and catered, specific workflows. But unless you have found a niche app that makes your business or hobby work which would also benefit from a 20ish percent performance boost across the board? I don't think this tablet is for you, at least not right now when you can buy a used model, 3rd, 4th and even 5th (M1) gen that would suit you just as well. In this video I go over just how similar the iPad Pro M1 and iPad Pro M2 are, touch on Apple Pencil hover, processor benchmarks and my thoughts on the state of iPad Pro for now!

Owner of an M1 ipad pro, as I already feel like I don't use it to it's true potential I really don't see any valid reason to upgrade.
The product feels good enough for many years to come.

The hover feature is game changing for artists. To see brush size without looking away is huge. This is how it is on a cintiq, surface pro, Samsung tab etc.

If you look back at the M1 iPad reviews after iPad OS came out also concluded that the iPad Pro was too hard to recommend. I think the M2 is the same. We all want to be able to use the Pro, but the reality is that most people would be happy with the Air.

Still have my 2018 iPad Pro 12.9. Didn’t care about the added rear cameras at all. Only changes I’ve cared for is the new screen on the larger model and that hover feature. Still can’t justify upgrading. I actually wanted to down size to the 11” but I want that new mini led screen… looks like I’ll continue to wait… as you said the 2018 iPad was so ahead of it’s time.

ipads are not ment to be upgraded every like the reddit/youtube community acts like. if you have the 2021 version, obviously this isnt for you, but if you have a older Non-M model or looking to upgrade from a infireror ipad, these are newest ipads with the newest chip that will last you for years. tablet desinge has pretty much peak, there is only so many ways you can desinge a rectangle, the only think apple can do at this point is to reduce the bezzles

The hover feature is a software limitation. It’s something that exists on capacitive touch technology and has for nearly a decade. Apple is just software limiting older iPads to have a feature to even give a single reason to sell the m2 pro.

I want to get better battery life. The chip and the Apple Pencil things are nice but not a major reason to upgrade my 2020 iPad Pro. I don’t care if the design is the same, but I want better battery life. That is all I care about from hardware, iPadOS is a different conversation but the M1 or M2 iPads has shown that the iPad Pro on the hardware side has peaked. 🤷‍♂️

I bought a refurbished 12.9 M1 iPad pro from Amazon, a week later they released the M2. Best decision of my life... 1 third of the price and not a single scratch on it, baterry new. I'm very happy

I can absolutely see why this is an almost pointless upgrade from current M1 users, but for myself personally I am actually going to go for this one as I’ve been on a basic iPad 6th Gen since 2018 and it just isn’t up to the task of my music-making anymore. I do all my computing on my iPad these days (haven’t owned a computer for over ten years, and if I need to use a laptop for a specific task I’ll use my girlfriend’s), and it’s my central hub for music making, both at home and performing live. I’m totally aware that the price is kind of insane, especially here in the UK, but I want to future proof myself and to be completely honest, I want something to treat myself to something extravagant!

Interested to see what Davinci Resolve is like compared to Lumafusion.

No need for 1, 000 disclaimers bro. It's a mediocre update & the iPad Pro hasn't proven itself to be useful as a "Pro" device outside of a couple of niches. Keep up the good work!

I bought the ipad air 5 and gave it to my mom. Then got me an m1 ipad pro. Honestly for a user that uses ipad mainly for surfing the internet and doing school work, it is not much of an upgrade. Let alone upgrading to an M2. I'll keep my m1 until they release an ipad with significant and real useful upgrade. Thank you for your review!

I’m a little disappointed that we didn’t get an update to the Apple Pencil. They need to add Find My, because I’ve lost 3 apple pencils 😂

Great well-reasoned review. With everyone recommending opting for a cheaper older model iPad Pro with a CPU less powerful than the M2, I have to wonder if one big advantage to paying more for the M2 is to get another few years of iPadOS support along with a few more years of performance that isn't degraded by an OS upgrade. Also, I really can't believe the M1 couldn't do "Apple Pencil Hover" support just as well as the M1. I could see MAYBE the display technology being a factor, but the display isn't being changed to support it! I suspect Apple just wanted to give people at least one more reason to consider an upgrade.

I got through college and now I'm working fulltime with the same 2nd Gen IPad Pro 12.9in (June 2017). I'm not too sure if I should upgrade anytime soon as they haven't released anything that groundbreaking for artists. I do really like the new hover feature though. It just isn't enough for me to make that jump.

Good review, it's about what I expected since there isn't much new to review right now.

I bought an 11" M1 Pro last year and use it all the time. It's great, but ever since I bought it I regretted not getting the 12.9 for the better screen... so I just bought the M2 12.9. The main tipping point was I was trading in my old iPhone and iPad so that paid for most of it. Now I don't feel that I will have buyer's remorse. The only crappy thing is last years' version started at $1399 CAD, but this year it's up to $1499 CAD since our dollar sucks right now.

Honest take. Given the new models here in the U.K. are 20+% more than the M1s lots of people are mopping up the M1s. The biggest shame is not putting the superb 12 inch screen tech into the 11 inch.
I’m still very happy with my 2017 10.5 in pro. Great speakers, pro motion, True Tone, 4 k etc and it’s light to carry around…….and I just put iOS 16.1 on it. Doesn’t get all the latest bells and whistles but it get hours of use for work and leisure every day. With the Smart Keyboard it’s also much lighter. I picked up my son’s 12 inch with the Magic Keyboard case and it felt as heavy as my M1 MBP13 16/512GB. I know which is better VFM….the MBP…..
