One of the wonderful things about this scene is the way Richard reads Elise's body language. When he first goes in for the kiss, grasping her shoulders, she's afraid (backs up against the door frame, says "no"), and he acknowledges her fear and responds immediately by loosening up, delicately touching and stroking her face -- a way to express comfort and gentle affection, a sign of "I mean you no harm." Then he very gently guides her chin upward, inviting her to look into his eyes. His expression is open, wholehearted, vulnerable, and he wants her to see exactly how he feels about her. Only after she has had the chance to take in the devastating fondness of his gaze does he lean in for a very gentle, and at first very tentative, kiss. It's not until she begins to reciprocate that the kiss becomes more passionate.

Honestly, I don't think this scene could be any more perfectly realized.

Jane Seymour said in an interview (I think it's a magazine) that he and Christopher actually dated back when they were filming the movie but they'd decided to keep it within themselves. They were going steady until they learned his ex is pregnant with his first child. Thus they became just friends afterwards.

That explains the chemistry. Good lord.

I'm very envious of the actresses who got to kiss Chris.... it's the same when he kisses Margot Kidder at the end of Superman II, he's SO gentle, and the way he caresses their faces. And the way he keeps smiling as he's touching her face, argh!

Love this scene! Been a fan of this movie for many years. I even have a replica of the portrait of Elise MacKenna that's displayed in the museum in the hotel. I like to imagine myself as Richard Collier as I watch the two of them kiss for the first time. The look on MacKenna's sweet face is so innocent and vulnerable, you can just feel the electricity between them as the two embrace. Perfect romantic fantasy!
