Or in other words, prevent a single or group of processes from consuming excessive amounts of virtual memory that could lead to performance or system instability.

To change the limit, it will differ slightly depending on your Linux distribution.

This can be done with the following Terminal command.

So, with the file open, simply scroll down to the bottom and add the following value.

Once done, save the file and reboot the machine.

Again, this can be done using the following Terminal command.

Once again, scroll down to the bottom and add the following value.

Save the file when done, and reboot the machine to apply.

To check that the new value has been applied, simply run the following Terminal command.

cat /proc/sys/vm/max_map_count

Which should return 2147483642

All done.

it seems you for get to mention to apply it after entering in the file you should do a " sudo sysctl -p " to apply it to the current session. no need to reboot.

The number of years we've been having to add this... I keep hoping that at least 'desktop' distros will start shipping with this set to a high value by default. So many of the tunable parameters in Linux are defaulted to run on machines built 20 years ago.

Cool thanks! For me /etc/sysctl.conf didn't exist. But making a file ending with .conf and dropping it in /etc/sysctl.d with the parameter as shown works. I'll have to test on a game that was crashing on me the other day.
