How is this still a debate? The entire theme of the movie is material greed versus the importance of family. It's totally a Christmas movie.

We’ve just had a show on Sky here (UK) about the science of stunts in Die Hard & definitely backing it as a Christmas classic! Although it is harder to watch now we know John would have been torn into bits jumping out of a window attached to a fire hose 😮😮😮

A Christmas movie is more of a genre than a seasonal occurrence.

Die Hard is testing the limits of the genre by making it a genuine action movie. It has all the Christmas themes, the tacky names of several characters, but it is an action movie first with an ad hoc Christmas theme.

Seeing how the internet is full of debates about this movie, it is very much on the edge.

I always think of die hard as a christmas movie. The christmas office party, holly, the funny jumper and so much more! And its snowing.

I haven't seen it in a while, but if I remember vorrectly, the wntire plot is able to happen at all because if the christmas party. Therefore, christmas is central to the plot, so it is, by definition, a christmas movie

The rule is very simple, a movie must involve or be set at or during christmas, second you can remove christmas entirely from the movie without any major rewrites and still have the same movie more or less then it is NOT a christmas movie.

Die hard only works at christmas, it is set around christmas, it involves a christmas party. It is the only time the building was empty apart from the upper staff that could open the vault at no other time of the year could this heist happen. So its a christmas movie.

Now a classic christmas movie that is not a christmas movie is home alone, if you change the time of the year and have the family all go away for a different reason say a wedding then the movie could still happen more or less with some minor rewrites instead of major ones.

Try and all those two rules to christmas movies and see which ones survive.
