Even opening from the center will still break it, sooner or later. It's the failure of both mechanical design and choice of materials in pursuit of lightness and slimness.

Thank you for the lesson on how to open a laptop, no one tells you these things when you buy them. Maybe the manufacturer needs to put a sticker on it. I am pretty sure I open mine from the center, but I will be more diligent about it now. Thank you

Just had this happen to me with my Dell 3511 which are notorious for broken hinges. Thanks to Ebay for new parts and Youtube videos I was able to do the repair myself for about $40 which included new cover, bezel, and hinges. Taking it apart and putting it back together was a lot easier than it looked, (take your time). One of the repair videos I watched suggested adjusting the tension in the hinges to make it a little easier to open and close which should make your repair less likely to need repeating.

A cracked screen bezel in the corner of the screen was my first experience with opening from the side back in the late 90's. The shop accused me of opening the screen back too far and because of that accusation I never returned to them. A couple of years later I found out about opening from the corners will cause damage. This was at a time when laptop screens were latched closed in the corners so that didn't help with the behaviour.
I've told everyone since then open from the centre.

Thanks for sharing this. I also do repairs like that occasionally. Most of the time lenovos, they get brittle after a couple of years. I always make the friction of the hinges a little lesser. That way the stress on the enclosure parts is a bit lesser. I also use abs plastic and AB glue to reinforce the enclosures.

Thats really informative, thank you! Also when he said he only charge whats the material cost, and pay up the "labor fee" himself, i knew he is the real one. He should get paid more!

Thank you for this video, very informative. Seems like all these newer laptops unfortunately are having the same issue. A few weeks ago my Galaxy Book 3 360 broke on the right side hinge and popped the screen out. The thing I was expecting, it was only 14 D A Y S old

I prefer the laptops with long center hinges. They seem like a sturdier design not subject to the opening stress of laptops with two flimsy hinges.

Most laptops have hinges that have a nut that controls the tension and it is too tight which causes the hinge to break the plastic housing over time . The hinges seem to get stiffer over time and this causes the problem. The laptop makers don't care and try to charge you when you make a warrantee claim. I have repaired my laptop by passing a screw with a nut through the hinge and the cover. My next new laptop I will loosen the nut slightly on both hinges to take away the strain. If you are afraid to do this get a computer repair tech to do it for you.

Thanks for the post. Just had this on an HP envy 13ba I have had many laptops over the last 30 odd years and this is the first it has happened to me. As you say the plastic degrades over time and on the hp one side failed quite badly. Used a resin to effect a repair but not sure how long that will last. Very disappointing given this weakness will lead to a lot of laptops being destoyed well before what should be their useful lifetimes.

Thank you for the video Sir. My laptop started to fail with the hinge, but I never thought it would be a problem. Now I have a dark-black stain in my lower right corner. It´s not a big deal, but it´s very annoying. Thanks for the advice, now and in the future I will open my laptop from the center. Actually not right now because I can´t close my laptop anymore, the 4 Phillips screws fell down, and the hinge doesn´t move anymore. Actually, my laptop is also a Dell Inspiron 15 5000 Series like that one in the video. Thanks for the video, and thanks for the information. Greetings from Mexico

My HP envy 13.3 hinge started to crack when opening and closing. It started not long after the warranty ran out! Apparently it's a common issue with the HP range.

Just happened with my Dell 3521. I always open it in the middle and it's never left my desk. I bought it just over a year ago. Serious lack of quality control by Dell.

Thank you for this video, I was able to open the laptop, the hinge was completely stuck before. I have no money(or intention) to repair it, so I'll just power through and make enough to buy a new one

Company should focus more on hinge design

Used to open from the side, got it fixed after the first time the hinge started playing up and was a lot more careful with it after. Still broke even worse even quicker, right when I don't have a penny to spare 😂😂😭
