In this video, I will cover the apparent downfall of perhaps the most storied and significant international side in the history of football. The Seleçao of Brazil is one of the most iconic teams within sports history and their presence and dominance in the World Cup has been a tale that has been told since the mid 1950's.

And whilst they still hold the record of winning the most FIFA World Cups in history with 5 magical triumphs to the top of the world, in he last five world cups, the Seleçao have failed to live up to expectations.

Join me, in the breakdown and analysis of Brazil's World Cup downfall and how a once unbeatable side has become a perennial disappointment in recent memory.

This is my fifth video ever as a YouTuber. It's also my fifth ever time I've ever edited or done any kind of voice track on a video, I'm usually a very reserved and private person but football has been the most significant thing in my life since I can remember and has stayed that way since then.

As many of you know, the love never dies.

Please let me know what I can improve on and what topics you wish to see me cover. This is my fifth, im sure there is a lot I can improve on.

Thank you again and I hope this is the beginning of an amazing journey on YouTube.

Neymars career is perhaps the biggest victim of the Messi/CR era.

Whithout them, his career would be considered incredible, only missing a World Cup as he would have won the Balandor in 2015 if Messi wasn't inhumanly good .

1st simple step for Brazil fans.
Never label a new potential player to be the next PELE.

The immense pressure and expectations may be too much and subconsciously affects their ability to win. The WC is always unpredictable and this is where the underdogs have an advantage because they have zero expectations and can just focus on playing ball. I hope to see Brazil win the next World Cup and cement their place at the top 🎉

We talk about this a lot in Brazil. Yes, there’s the pressure, but that’s nothing new. The Seleção has always had immense pressure since 1970, but they’ve performed under those circumstances before and even gone all the way.

The problem is the technical ability of our coaches: we’re still stuck in the past. Even R9 said, when he came back to Corinthians in 2008, that football here hadn’t changed since he had left Cruzeiro has an 18 year old boy.

Tite was far and away the best coach Brazil had, and he was outclassed and had absolutely no idea what to do against an aging Croatia side that, apart from its midfield, had nothing impressive going for it. Apart from the Germany defeat in 2014, this was our most embarrassing defeat ever. Since atleast in 2018 we got unlucky against Belgium’s greatest team in history.

His substitutions were laughable too, subbing off Paqueta, an AM, for Fred, another AM, and bringing off Militão, who was our best RB playing improvised and our best defender, to bring on Alex Sandro and move Danilo to RB, two mediocre players who were just coming off injury.

Don’t get me started on calling up Dani Alves at 39 too and wasting a call up spot on a position we were very weak in.

Our physical training is pathetic, we were exhausted and gassed out after 90 minutes whilst the Croatians could keep fighting.

Another weird thing was that Tite brought his son along with the staff, probably because he needs a job, rather than a psychologist to help deal with the pressure.

It’s not even a question of South American football being passed by the Europeans, since Argentina just won the trophy, we lack unity, teamwork and a real fighting spirit.

The Brazilian team in this tournament was immense, they lost concentration for a few minutes against Croatia and paid the price... I believe this team would have won the world cup

Brazil have always won through overwhelming talent. Neymar's generation, although still an excellent side, does not compare with the arsenals of their yesteryears.

Neymar clearly shouts for the team to fall back and defend, they didn't listened and conceded

Too much expectations.
Croatia was a real challenge for Brazil in the world cup. And they fail. On the other hand Argentina faced Netherlands, Croatia & final. Argentina didn't have any superstar except Messi. They were an average team but Brazil was full of superstars in every position. Argentina played like a team. On the other hand Brazilian coach was in total confusion who will play in which position. Everyone is a superstar. And that costs Brazil.
And Argentina coach deserves massive respect for winning the world cup with an average team.

just because he’s brazillian, people expect way more than he could give (via R9, Ronaldinho, Romario) not to say he’s not an amazing footballer, because he is one of the best. Maybe not Top 5, but around Top 10-12. But because he has so much mental pressure from social media and people wanting him to achieve things that he can’t because of that pressure, it just destroys him.

you may not see this comment, but you have a nice channel. VERY under the radar.

They had the best team on paper and performance throughout the tournament sadly they fell into thinking they're safe against Croatia who got a solid defense. Neymar deserves better ngl I feel bad always overshadowed by Messi/cr7, hopefully next world cup the team starts focusing & put in their mentality that they aren't safe at all and go all out. Like what Argentina did for Messi in fact their loss against Saudi Arabia is what kicked their behinds in gear again and playing every game like it's a knockout one, that's what Brazil needs to do next time

Everybody knows how incredible is the pressure over these men. Social media really takes it another level. And yet, they decided not to take any psichologist with the staff. Not a single one! Everyone will agree that this was an error that took it's share on the defeat

Brazil has very talented players everytime. If they don't have so much talented players i don't think the majority would consider them as the title favorites.

Neymar didnt play his full potential
Actually it's has to be CR7 vs Messi vs Neymar
But Messi overshadowed Neymar in Barca
Now Messi, Mbappe in PSG

Honestly they also knew they were favorites and it got to their heads. You can't tell me they didn't underestimate Croatia.

I am the biggest Brasil Fan since the early ninetees. But i really question the talent of those players in the world cup 2022. You have to measure them not only by talent but also by mental strenght and leadership. Allthough i really cheer for them everytime they play, they are nothing compared to the ninetees era. There is no Rivaldo, no Cafu, no Roberto Carlos, no Dunga, no Leonardo and certainly no They are all like Coutinho. And outstanding player on paper but lacks character and leadership. There was a time when Brasil had players like Juninho on the bench. Sorry.

The reason why Brazil failed is mainly entailing laziness, unlike Argentina, Brazil didn't have such a driving force, these guys assumed they'd win every match, whereas Argentina fought to win the matches. In the Croatia match when Brazil conceded, it was only the backline of Brazil that was there during the counter by Croatia, not one player tracked back fast, which explains why they lost, tired legs or not, you have to fight till the end, this is something Brazil didn't come across.

As a brazilian, and since your video focused mainly on Neymar and pressure, I would argue that pressure is mainly an issue for Neymar himself, not necessarily a main issue for the whole team. I'm from an age where I've seen Ronaldo, Romário, Ronaldinho, Rivaldo, Kaká, Adriano and many of the greatest brazilian players from the 90's and the 2000's. Absolutely no player has ever been more present on media - not just social media, but the media in general - than Neymar has. He was known among football fans even before he debuted in professional football. Along the early years of his career, when he was still playing here in Brazil, he was constantly the main attraction on some of the biggest TV shows, constantly the main piece in the news, tabloids and everything else. Neymar himself, his father, his sister, his ex-girlfirends, his affairs, his son, everyone around him and everything he did was subjected to wide media coverage.

To further talk about Neymar, we have to talk about another man: Galvão Bueno, the biggest, nationwide most known announcer and sports commentator; he was the main announcer for Brazil's main team's matches in the biggest TV channel/network on the entire country for some 30 odd years. Galvão officialy retired from annoucing after 2022's World Cup ended. He covered 13 World Cups. When Neymar begins to play for Brazil's main team, not long after he debuted for Santos, Galvão idolized Neymar like he was some kind of second coming in the making. There is speculation to why that happened, but nothing can be ultimately proven as a fact. Ronaldo (R9), through his sports business company was one of the main entities behind Neymar's career at the time, the main one being Neymar's father, who was and still is his manager. There is said to have been meetings of the pair of managers with the network executives and Galvão. Through what only could have been a lot of money and other things we can't know for certain, it's said they sealed a deal. Galvão, on behalf of the channel would have to boost Neymar's name and popularity, and the other shows and news programs of the network would do the same. Although there is some evidence for this case, we don't have access to many details, so again this is speculation so far. Galvão widely popularized the term "menino Ney", something like "Ney the kid", "boy Ney", anyway, you got the gist of it. "Menino Ney" was the most well known nickname for Neymar in Brazil, one that he is still know by to this day even being 30 years old already. Neymar was treated and portrayed like the ultimate golden boy, untouchable, a young celebrity on the rising. It was almost like football was just a background for his fame.

Those notions were so insistently pounded into brazilian's minds by the media that after some time it started being annoying and even infuriating. Bear in mind that all of this was around 2009-2013, BEFORE social media had the humongous size it has today. A lot of people started to gain distaste on Neymar's figure even before he was involved in any major controversy. Despite that, some sports comentators would say back in the day that Neymar was the biggest one to ever come after Pelé. Some still maintain this opinion as a fact to this day. Neymar's ego was boosted so much from such a young age that he was quickly known among professionals and people around him (inside and outside the field) for his entitlement, insubordination, lack of respect, short temper, emotional outbursts and so many more problems. So much so that back in 2010, the year after he debuted, Atlético Goianiense's coach René Simões said on a press interview right after his team played a match against Santos that by indulging Neymar and letting him behave like that they were "creating a monster", and that Neymar needed to be educated and to learn his place. Neymar would stand up to referees when they didn't call a foul on him (even after rolling on the ground, acting and exaggerating everything) as well as he would defy the orders and authority from coaches and older teammates alike. If there was a penalty, he would grab the ball and run up to the mark to take it, even if and when he was not the team's main penalty taker. If the coach decided to swap him in the middle of a match, Neymar would get angry and argue with him. It was like Neymar was a star and everyone else had to bow their heads to him, and if someone stood up to him, they could only be envy, filled with jealousy, only trying to take away his shine.

The following years were more or less the same, things for Neymar would barely change. The only exception was his time at Barcelona. Things were smoother and with less controversy because he wouldn't and couldn't defy and try to trump figures like Messi, Suarez, Xavi, Iniesta or Luis Henrique. He had to play by their rules, as a team. When he left Barça and then joined PSG, Neymar showed his true colors again. He thought he could boss the entire team, but he is terrible at that. What Neymar failed to perceive after so many years is that football is team played, and he is at his best being a team player. Although technically skilled beyond any doubt, Neymar is not the kind of player that can oftenly turn an entire match by himself, like most people believe. He is a team player. In spite of that, the notion of "a genius" that can do everything by himself was hammered into his brain since the beginning, because we, Brazil as a country, were in a shortage of great players like the ones we had in the past. So, by being the best and youngest one, Neymar was always taught to believe he had to do everything by himself and the team had to play by him. This is a notion openly shared by many who coached him, even by the media and sports commentators.

It's not like bad behaviour is a new problem for brazilian players, we had players that would rival Neymar long before his time. Romário is one of the greatest examples. He liked the night life and partying way too much. He was oftenly overbearing and hard-headed. Romário even left european football and came back to Brazil because he liked partying too much and he wanted to be around his friends. His big head would ofently come through a big mouth, and so his irreverence was well documented in the media. Through controversy, specially with coaches, he would not get to play the 2002 World Cup. He also didn't like training, so was no rarity for him to skip it. Despite all of that, still, Romário always delivered. In the last minute, Romário asked to take a penalty in the 1994 World Cup final, even if by then he only had taken three penalties in his entire professional career and he would even refuse to take penalties in training, mocking the other players' training. Still, he argued with the coach saying something like "I've got you covered, let me handle this". And he scored. Romário is renowed for instances were he would stand up to coaches and tell them things like "If I score three goals in this game, you will swap me after halftime and I am off to a plane to Brazil to party". And he would always score. He famously said, in more than one instance, that "when I was born, God stared at me and said 'you are the man'". He was Zlatan before Zlatan. Romário thrived in challenge and pressure, Neymar cracks under it. Yet still Neymar is looked up by all his country mates like the main source of leadership and inspiration.

By this point, we come to another crucial point in Brazil's downfall: the coaches. Tite, who was our coach for the last six years is not a professional capable of winning a World Cup. Is not like he is overtly bad, he is perhaps the best brazilian coach we could have picked at the time, but he does not have what it takes. He doesn't study the teams he is up against; he is not capable of making significant changes to a team, to the team tactics or formation during a match; he is not able to comprehend where he fails and why, and that comes through all his interviews with his snooty persona. Even worse, Tite's philosophy revolves around pleasing the players he likes and trust, he looks up to them even when they are not playing well for months or years on end. Throughout all his years with Brazil, Tite always treated Neymar like a protegee. He took Neymar under his arms and would never let anyone criticize him. Neymar was never left to stood up for himself. That kind of attitude only made things worse for everyone. Even Galvão - who was one of the biggest boasters of Brazil's team, coach and specially Neymar- was in a falling out in the last couple of years. He heavily criticized Tite and Neymar, even controversially called Neymar "an idiot". A lot of people that really liked Neymar are now angry at him, not because of what he is, but because of what he could have been. So much wasted potential. He could have rivaled Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo's hegemony if he really wanted to.

Football here in Brazil, specially concerning to coaches, is very much stuck some 20 years in the past, we are pretty much living off our past glory. Things are changing sluggishly due to a myriad of reasons, one of them being the hard-headed, proud and stubborn mentality of many people involved. There is also a fair bit of corruption, lobbying and general lack of investiment and care by some of the biggest football associations. For now, we will have to look at our "hermanos" and historical rivals Argentina to at least try and start to get our stuff together.

I’ve been thinking about this for a long time because I remember watching Brazil in 1998 in 2002 and so forth. They have always been favorites just because they are Brazil and they have the history of five World Cup wins but I think they are reaching a tipping point I believe that in 2026 they will not go into the tournament as favorites only contenders if that happens they won’t have so much pressure to perform and then crack under that pressure. I believe that if they just go with us contenders in that be branded as favorites, they have a better chance and also it could be there 24 year old dry spell just like in 94 when it was a 24 year old dry spell.

I can't believe they didn't play defensively after scoring that late goal in 2nd half of extra time. The whole last few mins felt so dumb it was unbelievable. And once they got to tie breaker, they almost completely lost all the confidence. Looks like they didn't learn from Croatia vs Japan's match.

Hey I’m a Brazil fan and 48 yrs old. I have followed them since 86. But this current team is not a accomplished as the 1994 and 2002. Compare player for player, and all will be revealed. Brazil also has the following problems with certain positions LB and RB. CM ball carrying player like Modric. Also a forward. Brazil has not had a player that leads any league in scoring. That’s there problem. Not social media.
