I'm surprised by the incorrect terms being used here. A partial hysterectomy is only the removal of the uterus. A total hysterectomy is the removal of the uterus and cervix. The removal of the ovaries is a separate procedure called an oophorectomy.

Women who’ve had hysterectomies may enter menopause almost 4 years earlier. The blood supply to the ovaries may be compromised during surgery by ligation, spasm, or thrombosis. Early menopause is known to be associated with increased cardiovascular risk such as heart attacks and strokes, as well as osteoporosis. Premature menopause can also increase the risk of dementia.Hysterectomy weakens the supports for the upper and mid-vagina, and can cause stress urinary incontinence. Removal or cutting of the ligaments supporting the cervix and vagina may predispose women to the development of vaginal vault prolapse. Furthermore, the effectiveness of prolapse repair can be compromised by the removal of the cervix and ligaments, which are used to anchor an effective repair.Studies regarding the effect of hysterectomy on a woman’s sex life can be confusing. Essentially, it depends on whether her symptoms that led her to consider hysterectomy were affecting her sex life in the first place. Women whose sex life was ruined by menstrual symptoms might find hysterectomy “liberating”, improving the sex life that they didn’t previously have.
On the other hand, women whose sex life was not affected by their menstrual symptoms need to be aware that studies have demonstrated decreased libido and altered orgasm sensation, especially after total hysterectomy. Nerve damage during surgery may be a cause. For some women, uterine contraction is essential for orgasm. This could be lost after hysterectomy, leading to failure to orgasm or changes in the nature of them.
Surgery may also change the anatomy of the top of the vagina, resulting in an altered sensation for women and their partners.
Constipation following hysterectomy has been reported, and this may be a result of nerve injury.A recent Mayo Clinic study has shown that hysterectomy, even without removal of the ovaries, is associated with a 33% increased risk of coronary heart disease. The risk is increased by 250% if the hysterectomy is performed on women younger than 35 years of age.

I had a total hysterectomy also removing 1 ovary Aug of 2023. Started with sore breast, brain fog, joint pain, directly after. My doctor looked at me crazy like none of that was related to having a hysterectomy. Prior to the hysterectomy I could do crash diets and lose 20lbs fast now I’ve been doing the absolute most to lose weight in the last 5 months and I’m down 5lbs. I feel like I have to laugh to keep from crying 😭
On a Side note, if you’re having joint pain start taking Collagen, it Works Wonders!

4 1/2 weeks post hysterectomy with cervix and fallopian tubes removal. All hormone levels were tested prior to surgery and were within normal range. I am 46 yrs old with prior breast cancer and a double mastectomy in my past. Estrogen is not an option due to the cancer, progesterone supplements prior to surgery set my moods into unhealthy swings/rages. Endometrial biopsy prior to surgery came back normal as well as ultrasounds. Very heavy, very long, very crampy cycles triggered this path. They found PCS (varicose veins) feeding into my organs when pathology report came back. Recovery first week was rough (6/10) but after one week no pain meds were needed. Moments of hot flashes and night sweats have happened but seem to have calmed down over the past few weeks. Laparoscopic procedure with removal through the vagina with an experienced surgeon. Very happy I went through with this!

I had a partial hysterectomy done 12-2022, (still have both ovaries) I was 35 when I had it done, currently 37. I had this done to 2 cervical cancer (3 failed leep procedures) and endometriosis that was present since age 15. (I was on and off Lupron injections for years and always on the DEPO so I never got my mensural cycle) I have had low libedo (had this prior to surgey as well but I think this was due more to pain during intercourse), adult acne (on neck mainly), insomnia (have a hard time sleeping) but then fatigue during the day. Having a hard time find a OBGYN that wants to put me on hormone due to age.

Hysterectomy 7 weeks ago. Hormones are a mess. I kept my ovaries. I don't think they are functioning right. My Dr. looked at me like I'm crazy saying "but you kept your ovaries, you should be fine." I'm experiencing so many symptoms of menopause so I don't know what's going on. Definitely was not aware that this was a possibility. Don't know if I would have had one if I knew.

Why do doctors forget about the THYROID!!??? It's so important. It's not just sex hormones but thyroid hormones are deeply affected by perimenopause, post menopausal & with hysterectomy, if on birth control, etc. Run a full thyroid hormone panel. TSH, T4, free T4, T3, free T3, reverse T3, thyroglobulin & thyroid antibodies. Sex h& thyroid hormones interact together.

I had a partial and so i kept both ovaries. At my 2 week postop i requested hormone panel run and my estradiol is 1244. Highest should ever be according to the portals chart is high 300s. I felt off and on very well for 2 wks and then immediately felt like i was dying from fatigue. Went to ER and they did a CT Scan w contrast and saw a 2 inch ovarian cyst. I fear this estrogen dominance will harm me… lead to other cancers so I am using a yam based progesterone cream from Amazon. I just feel I cant wait around for my ob/gyn’s office to see me and prescribe. Everyone says progesterone is supposed to help balance estrogen. Fingers crossed.

I had my fallopian tubes removed when I was 33. Now my doctor is suggesting a uterus removal preserving the ovaries due to large fibroids and cysts which are painful. After I had my fallopian tubes removed, I gained so much weight although my doctor dismissed it as "you're getting older, weight gain can I am now concerned that having my uterus removed can trigger more weight gain. I don't want that! there seems to be so many opinions on this, I'm confused about what to do. I'm only 42.

I was experiencing lack of sleep, fibroids, prolapse, head aches, tiredness, and ibs. I went to a iv clinic and they told me about hormon replacement therapy. I talked my doctor he said in menstruating wemon it was too hard to tell if or how much to give. He didn't like it. Went to my gynecologist for second opinion she said I was in risk or a stroke if I took it. Sh3 said that with my prolapse a hysterectomy was my best option. Then I skipped a period and the next period was like I was bleeding to death. Turns out my fibroid had multiplied and blocked the tube. So I had a hysterectomy and I still have sleeplessness and headaches.

I had a partial hysterectomy at 28. I still have my ovaries and have been to the doctor post op for weight gain. The doctor dismisses every complaint. But I definitely feel a difference in my body post hysterectomy I’m not a good way. The only positive thing is I do not bleed all the time now and have cramps. I originally got a hysterectomy because of having endomyosis

I’m so confused. My surgeon explained the removal of my uterus, cervix and fallopian tubes was a Total hysterectomy. I did not have an oophorectomy (removal of ovaries). I kept my ovaries. Heavy constant bleeding and a fibroid cyst was the reason for my hysterectomy. I was 47, now 53 and I will be starting HRT in two days. I hope it’s not too late to be starting and I reap the benefits. Also told I don’t need progesterone because I have no uterus?

I had a partial hysterectomy 10years ago and my life is ruined. I don’t recognize myself. My symptoms are all over the place. Chronic fatigue, brain fog, digestive issues, ovarian cyst …

There's not really much content on ovaries on youtube. I am 5 days post hystorectomy. I went in planning to remove both ovaries. Then i asked my doc if he could keep one if it didn't have cysts. I ended up keeping one ovary and i wonder is it still there by ligaments or what? Where do the eggs go? So many questions...???? How does it still work?
Also you discussed hormone levels and discussing them with your doc. I dont think my fsh was ever tested in this process. I hear many times hormones fluctuate throughout the day so test data on hormones is not really a reliable gauge.
Would love to see a video on this. Also how the vagina can feel the same for the partner without a cervix? -No, not me...i am not cleared yet.
Also, no one talks about how fibroids or endomyosis can increase flow...???

this is an interesting conversation. I was glad to listen to it. However, one thing I disagree on is about how you should do everything you can before surgery. I feel the patient autonomy is the most important thing I have had prolonged suffering because doctors wanted me to try every possible thing before they were willing to do a hysterectomy, knowing in my heart the entire time that it would never change. I really think the focus should be more in what the patient prefers.

A bit late in the day to comment but I had a partial hysterectomy 10 weeks ago (uterus, cervix and tubes was left my ovaries) and I have had a horrible time emotionally and hormonally since. I started gaining a lot of weight about 3 weeks PO and started feeling horrible emotionally - depressed, insane fatigue, intense anxiety panic attacks. Started one one spray lenzetto estrogen spray a week ago and am feeling a bit better still gaining weight every day though.
