Wim Hof: What Nobody Tells You 😑

I have the utmost respect for @iceman_hof and how he helps people becoming more conscious about breathing, health & happiness. The world would be a better place if we had more Wim Hof's. But. There is a big but. If we go deeper into what deep and fast breathing actually does, there is no way to go around the topic of hyperventilation and the physical (temporary) adaptations that come. with it. There is a reason why the Wim Hof Method is not suitable for diving or any kind of underwater activity, and that is because of the higher chance of blacking out due to hyperventilation. Now that being said, if you use the method in dry land, you should still know what you're doing and what is happening. Of you're interested in what hyperventilation does to the body, search for GERT LEROY HYPERVENTILATION on my Youtube channel. Peace ✌️

The reality is I quit drinking after having alcohol withdrawals doing this breathwork so I'll stick with it. Wim Hof saved my life.

As a firefighter, I encounter hyperventilating people often. There are different forms of hyperventilation. The Wim Hof method is a controlled version. Whereas a panic induced hyperventilating person has lost control. A simple measure to prove Wim’s method does in fact work, is by putting on a SpO2 monitor which tells your exact oxygen level. Since I am in the field and experience these people and have the monitor, I can tell you my oxygen level does not drop doing Wim’s breathing method. However, the tingling is a common symptom of hyperventilating when done incorrectly or not controlled. The more I practiced Wim’s method the less I get the tingling.

Don't worry guys. The "feel good" feeling comes from the body's response to hyperventilation. When the brain senses this decrease in oxygen, it causes your body to release adrenaline and norepinephrine, which can produce euphoria, clarity of the mind and vasoconstriction. Also, this temporary decrease in oxygen is not dangerous because it is self induced and not prolonged enough to cause any damage

Andrew huberman disagrees... I will listen to one of the world leading nueroscientists, not a tik tok guru

Never felt like a comments section had my back more than this one!

Why does my oxygen saturation go from 99% to 100% while wearing an oximeter doing Wim Hof then?
It seems like it should be the opposite based on what you're saying.

Folks, this guy is just tapping into the algorithm by using Wim Hof’s name and then saying stuff without substance that’s supposed to debunk him. Just ignored and don’t click on his videos. He’s leeching off Wim’s YouTube algorithm.

Don't listen to this guy. People like this are keeping you from achieving greatness. I've never felt as good as I feel once I'm done with my breathwork and it helps me stay calm and control my nerves during stressful situations ✌️❤️

Hi friends, wanted to add some more nuance to this conversation :) True: that in the most basic textbook definition of hyperventilation as “increased gas exchange per time unit”, Wim Hof breathing is indeed a type of hyper (=more than normal) ventilation (breathing).
If we look more nuanced though, there are vast and important differences between WH and what people normally speak of as “going into hyperventilation”:

With WH, you take full and deep inhales and simply let go on the exhale. >> This creates a state of hyper oxygenating the body.
Whereas when people go into stress induced hyperventilation, you’ll notice quick and short/shallow inhales followed by a more forceful/active exhale. >> This creates hypoxia and vasoconstriction as you correctly say in your video.

So although both exchange more gas per time unit than regular every day breathing – one increases cellular oxygenation and the other does, well, the opposite.

This also explains why, with WH, you can hold your breath on the exhale for up to several minutes because of the amount of residual oxygen circulating in your system – while with regular hyperventilation you wouldn’t be able to do this, as you’re already in an oxygen deprived state.

Also by the simple “gas per time unit definition”, one could say that Wim Hof breathing as well as Transformational Breathwork, Holotropic Breathing, Rebirthing, Quantum Light Breath, Taoist breathwork, Breath of Bliss, and even some forms of yogic Pranayama (and the way you breathe while running, dancing or working out) are all types hyperventilation – but as anyone who has experienced any of these modalities would be able to describe – the experiential effect of all of these are all unique and very different.

Lastly, if you were to do a brain scan on someone doing WH vs. someone in regular hyperventilation, you’d find vastly different kinds of brain activity (explained in length in other videos), as well as the activation of the sympathetic vs parasympathetic nervous system.
So in summary lol: same same (at first glance) - but vastly different. :)

Don't know what you are talking about but, when everything from the shoulders and up was going dead the Wim Hof Method brought me back to life.
