What is Woke? Woke Culture Explained

"Woke" is an adjective derived from African-American Vernacular English (AAVE) meaning "alert to racial prejudice and discrimination". It has since evolved to encompass a broader awareness of social inequalities such as sexism, and has been used as shorthand for American Left ideas involving identity politics and social justice.
"Woke culture" refers to a cultural movement characterized by a heightened awareness of social justice issues, particularly issues of race, gender, and sexuality. This movement has been driven in part by social media, which has allowed marginalized groups to share their experiences and raise awareness of their struggles.
The phrase stay woke has history in African-American Vernacular English since 1930s, in some contexts referring to an awareness of the social and political issues affecting African Americans. The term "woke" can be traced back to African American activist and author, William Melvin Kelley, who used the term in his 1962 novel, "A Different Drummer". The term was later popularized in the 2008 song "Master Teacher" by Erykah Badu, and has since become more widely used in social justice circles.
The term re-emerged in the 2010s and it meant not only racial consciousness but also that of gender as well as other discriminated identities, originally in the American context. During the 2014 Ferguson protests, the phrase was popularized by Black Lives Matter (BLM) activists seeking to raise awareness about police shootings of African Americans. The term also gained widespread usage in social justice circles, particularly in the wake of the MeToo movement.
After seeing use on Black Twitter, the term woke was increasingly used by white people, often to signal their support for BLM, which some commentators have criticised as cultural appropriation. Initially this wider adoption spread primarily among the young or the millennial generation. As it spread internationally, the term was added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2017.

Implications of Woke Culture on the United States:
The implications of woke culture on the United States are complex and contested. Supporters argue that it has helped to raise awareness of important social justice issues and has led to tangible progress in areas such as police reform, LGBTQ+ rights, and workplace diversity.

Critics, on the other hand, argue that it has led to a culture of "cancel culture" and political correctness, stifling free speech and creating a climate of fear and division.
In conclusion, the term "woke" has become a key part of the cultural lexicon in recent years, reflecting a growing awareness of social and political issues related to social justice and inequality. While the implications of woke culture on the United States are complex and contested, it is clear that this movement has had a significant impact on the social and political landscape of the country. Thank

One of the key aspects of woke culture is its focus on intersectionality, which is the idea that social justice issues are interconnected and cannot be viewed in isolation. This means that advocates for social justice must be aware of the ways in which issues such as race, gender, sexuality, and class intersect and impact one another.
Overall, the impact of woke culture is still evolving, and it remains to be seen how it will shape the social and political landscape of the United States in the years to come.

Great video! It’s important to have an open discussion around woke culture, as it brings attention to social justice issues and the need for inclusion.

It may have even been a good thing, but every good thing, taken to the extremes, becomes bad and damaging.

I just don't see any significant discrimination.... police violence against Blacks is only higher when viewed using their percentage of the population (30%) which means, numerically it happens far more often to Whites ...but that isn't "newsworthy". The gay people I know are very successful and fairly well off. In most places in the U.S. there is a labor shortage...so companies are hiring practically anyone. If they show up for work everyday and try to do a good job...they will be appreciated.

"WOKENESS"🤔 refers to a contemporary ideology rooted in Critical Theory, race, and identity politics, often infused with elements of Marxism, which emphasizes a hierarchical view of victim-hood and collective identity. This ideology tends to prioritize group identities over individual agency, leading to an overemphasis on identity categories such as race, gender, and sexual orientation. Critics argue that "wokeness" fosters a culture of victim-hood, promotes intolerance towards differing viewpoints (commonly known as "cancel culture"), and undermines the principles of individualism and meritocracy. Furthermore, it is often associated with policies and practices that prioritize diversity over qualifications, potentially leading to reverse discrimination and the devaluation of excellence and achievement.

“Abolish the police”
Has got to be one of the most selfish, childish, and stupidest phrase ever.

FINALLY, someone actually explained what “Woke” means! Thank you!
I’ve been waiting for a definitive explanation ever since I first heard the term used in a context not related to getting out of bed in the morning. Again, thank you.

Blacks didn’t take on all of those marginalized groups. The alphabet group used the black legislation to create laws for the alphabet group and also attached that group to social justice for black peoples. Ad s black person I feel like the s social justice work by black people for black people has been high jacked by other marginalized groups and to lump us all together is disgusting, because doing so has put black people ad the face of homosexuality. We are not ignorant to what is happening.

It’s not society’s responsibility to make people with emotional issues feel good about themselves and boost their self esteem. This is where consultation with a psychologist specializing in cognitive behavioral therapy is highly recommended. If you think you’re a dog, lift your leg or squat and pee like one but don’t expect society to call you a dog just to make you feel good about yourself. Please, get help, seriously. And one other thing, get your head out of social media. Social media has disastrous effects on its users. The younger the user the more susceptible they are to its harmful influence.

As a Woke generation X survivor I can say that these individuals need something to believe in. In the 90s we has rockstars movie stars and every other star to feed off of todays Woke kids and adults have politics and their rejection. what comes of this other than political tension and misguidance. In my day I was a freak and was bullied and tortured but today I would not change who I was only how I reacted towards others. Yes I was a complete idiot and regret many things from my past but at least I had a generational power like music to back me up what do you Gen Z Woke kids today YOU SHOULD GET FUCKING CREATIVE OR

To give a voice to the marginalized or the less heard group is good . However it should not be used to the extreme and exploited.
