If $100k is the new middle class, that puts many in dire poverty !

Not having a car payment is one of the nicest feelings in the world. I bought an older Elantra from a 90 year old woman who had to give up her keys after a minor fender bender. She used it as a grocery getter for a decade. 1k and fixed it up myself, it had only 63k miles on it. Insurance $50 a month. I hope to drive it until it dies.

Loved every second of my watch to the very end. I could really use this, its obvious that you can only move fromm one level of wealth to the next by investments. I’m 52 and disabled since 2007, still own a small business with $80K in savings. But I'd still love to grow my investments ahead of my retirement.

Whenever I visit America now I'm shocked how expensive everything is. $200 a night for a semi decent hotel that 7-8 years ago was $100. Just getting a pretzel or something walking along can be like $15. And the worst thing, everyone holding their hand out (figuratively) for a tip for every single thing. Resort fees, parking fees. It makes it unenjoyable to travel there constantly worried how much you're going to have to pay

$1k for groceries for two and $850 on financed vehicles, and $200 on cell phones? I see a spending problem.

40k is the new poverty line in most places.

So what you described isn't middle class. Its a step above poverty. The American dream consists of a single income, 2.1 kids and a yearly vaction. Thats hard to achieve now with a dual income household.

I can't imagine being married with no kids and spending $1000/mo on groceries 😭

Hit 108k today. I'm really grateful for all the knowledge and nuggets you had thrown my way over the last months. Started with 15k in February 2025

Dude, you live in luxury!! I make 40k and share a small rental 1-bedroom apartment with my toddler. We don't eat out EVER (that includes take-out, Starbucks, delivery, ...), I've never been to a nail salon, I paid my 20+ year old car in cash, I have a prepaid card for my second-hand phone and almost all my daughter's clothes (and many toys) are thrifted. We buy and cook what's on offer or reduced. I don't go to the movies, events, or whatever.
I work full time and have a Master's from a good uni (no student loan, thankfully) and I had always assumed that would place me in the (upper) middle class. How wrong I was.

The middle class doesnt exist anymore buddy. If you can’t comfortably afford kids, including sudden medical expenses, you’re not middle class. You’re slightly above poverty, true, but middle class that does not make.

This needs to be talked about more and not only during election years. The scariest part is how fast the middle class is shrinking.

He’s being honest at least about what they spend. They obviously can afford it. It’s still insane what everything costs. Don’t go attacking him just because they can afford a few “luxuries “ in your eyes. This is coming from a super broke can’t afford anything extra and has to choose between groceries or pay rent late. It’s rough out here.
