Mora Companion Stainless: Cleaning & Sharpening My Work Knife

Over the years, I’ve noticed that many people tend to idolize their knives rather than put them to work. My approach is different—my knife is a tool, and I use it as such. I use it for a variety of "questionable" tasks: as a fire poker, to pick up burning stoves; I may baton it into a tree like a spike; I grind off 1/16" of the spine for the initial sharpening; I cut up cans for Hobo Stoves; I top board fire rolls with the handle; and, I rarely sharpen the tip. Let me reiterate, it’s all about convenience and functionality.
Of course, given such hard use, it requires regular cleaning and sharpening. I’ll show you how I maintain its edge and cleanliness to ensure it remains a reliable tool.

I just purchased a second Mora and found the spine to be very rounded. My first Mora had a great edge to it that scraped well so I was bummed to find the new knife wasn't up to par. My first thought after the discovery was "need to go to David West's channel to find out how to sharpen this thing." I appreciate all the information you have on your channel!

I enjoyed the video, David. It caused me to wonder if WD40 and ash would clean the knife as well? Then I wondered about water and ash? I must try it now. Thanks for the inspiration! It was sort of nostalgic for me to see your mora up close and dirty….because I know what it has been through after having watched how you use it daily for months now. Very cool to see a well used and respected mora! I sure hope someone in the company has seen your videos! You are one of their best salesman IMHO. They should sponsor you! There ain’t no one that can sheath it like you. It’s like watching a good old western movie, as some of those gunslingers could act at sheathing their six gun like that. They could take lesson from you…the real deal!

David, i own many knives. Some expensive and some not so much. In my opinion, Morakniv knives are the best knives on the market for the price. They last forever and that Smith's sharpening stone realkybdoes get it extremely sharp....razor sharp. I guess thats why I own so many. I do like the stsinless steel version over the carbon just because it is easy to keep clean and it doesnt rust. The carbon is thicker but I favor the stainless. Helped my buddy clean a hog the other day and he was amazed how sharp and easy to sharpen it was. For those out there that have never cleaned a hog...it is rough on a knife. The morakniv stainless companion made short work of it. I did have to sharpen it twice but it doesnt take many passes to get it dangerouly sharp. I still wish they made the chartruese colored one. Bright green handle. They stopped making them and I kick myself for not ordering 3 or 4 when I had the chance.

I'm ok with collecting things. I have a few knives to get dirty and a few that I baby.
The correct tool for a job. Always a good thing.

Good Ol' Right Guard takes me way back to my junior high days in gym class. No wonder it would burn my arm pits!

Hi Dave,

The best cleaner is Eucalyptus Oil. Give it a try if you can get it in the US.

It beats alcohol, goo gone etc etc.

Its kinda weird seeing an American guy not driving his lawnmower 😂😂😂. But your garden looks great, with lawn and the woods in the back. Beautiful place you live in.

I find that turpentine is an excellent chemical for cleaning a knife, especially where it has seen a lot of fat wood.

Hi David! If they ever held a YouTube Jeopardy contest, maybe one of the questions would be: "what brand of deodorant does fire making king, David West, use?

What are honey 🍯 mushrooms 🍄? Can you eat them? I pick and eat some mushrooms like: Morrell, Chantelle, Puffballs, chicken of the woods.
