Spine Sharpening My Mora Companion Stainless, A Superscraper

Since I've filed so much stainless steel pipe and angle and other stock at work before, I was convinced that my Mora Companion's Stainless Steel Spine would file also. HAH! The first file I tried, a China made, was fairly used and took off very little material. I bought a Lowe's Kobalt 12" mill file and it started to cut for about 30 seconds then started skating. Even after cleaning it, it would not cut anymore. I figured a good old Nicholson File like what we used at work for years would surley get it done. Likewise, It only cut for about 10 seconds and started skating.
Oh Well, since the last Stainless Mora Spine that I squared up went quickly and easily with a side grinder... guess it's going to have to be the grinder again.
Please, come see what a super scraper I turned it into, follow the LINKS below, and SUBSCRIBE. Thank You!

David, anyone else attempting instructional videos of any kind would do well to emulate your presentation style. Nice work.

I tried this on my Mora no 2, it now scrapes better than my Casström no.10 SFK.

I've got 10 of the same Mora knives. I like how sharp they are. I hated the fact it wouldn't throw spark. Now I know the rest of the story. 😁😁😁😁 Guess what I'm doing on my day off tomorrow. Thanks for sharing 👍

I am so glad you posted this video. I tried to do this with a file and gave up. Thanks to you, I won't have to buy a Garberg !

Got my 2 from tradesman tool shop. Call carpenter knife, made in the same place I think by Mora. I love these knives!

I use to grind the back of some of my knives to 60 degrees until I saw you do this.
plus I can now use the opposite for sparks now, yes I also learned that from your channel.

P.S. the 60 worked great except it would leave bumpy areas on the stick not so much with your bur method.

I forgot to mention I was a meat cutter for years before cable so my grinding method was a sharpening stone, they work when files won't but

Try using a fine single cut file and draw file instead of cross filing. It will do a good job and won't hurt the grip.

I don't have your experience with tools, but I used a belt sander that worked pretty good.

Off topic, I was watching the Magnolia ash fire roll video. I live in the desert and don't have wood ash handy but it sure is dry. I tried a fire roll with cosmetic pads my wife didn't remember and some fine black iron powder, it only takes a tiny pinch of it. I used half of the pad {flat cotton ball} and probably 1/64 of a teaspoon of the iron powder. You could light a cigarette right off the roll. I put the roll in the corner of a bent piece of cardboard and with gentle blowing it burst into flames in about 30 seconds. Might be something different. Thanks for showing the fire roll videos!

I think a good Dremel tool with the right stone bit would work. It will probably take a little longer but you don't have the issues you have with the angle grinder.

Quite surprised how fast the bamboo scrapings took a flame - unless you speed it up there?

It appeared to take a fierce flame quicker than the fatwood.

Mora knifes are the best all round survival, camping, fishing, kitchen use, hiking to almost anything you need a knife for strong easy to sharpen keep their edge and if looked after and a little oil on the blade when not using over time will last along time .. I just wish they wouldn't round the spine .. it actually makes them look unfinished as my freind said to me after I recommend it. Since then I've tweaked it .. I do think they need to make a left hand version (this would only be the sheath) and a hole in the handle for a wrist strap where you need both hands free but a sharp knife to hand .. otherwise they are the best ever ESP the price.. my freind has many survival knives etc some cost £60/100+ and his favourite now after I altered the spine is his go to Mora in carbon steel..Dave do you think I could pop a drill bit through the back of the handle for a wrist strap/safety cord or do you think that's a silly idea .. I often find building a shelter I have my knife in my mouth which isn't hygienic or safe ..
