Mark Takahashi and Will Kaufman break down the best hybrid cars for 2019 and 2020 chosen by the experts at Edmunds. They also highlight the best plug-in hybrids available right now. Each vehicle in this video has undergone Edmunds' rigorous testing and evaluation process.

Mainstream hybrid cars may have been popularized by hatchbacks like the Prius, but these days their ranks also include a wide variety of vehicles. Plug-in electric vehicles, or PHEVs, use a gasoline engine coupled with an electric motor and a large battery pack that can be charged by plugging it in. They offer a limited all-electric range, and they can also operate as normal hybrids.

Our list of the Best Hybrid Cars:

2019 Honda Insight 1:20
The Insight, our favorite among fuel-sippers, is a hybrid for people who want stellar fuel economy but don't necessarily want to broadcast their green credentials. It is roomy, quick among compact hybrids, and has refreshingly well-proportioned styling and a clean, function-driven cabin.

2019 Toyota Prius 1:51
If you want efficient, eco-friendly driving and a ton of utility, the Toyota Prius remains hard to top. Competitors have emerged to challenge the Prius' fuel economy crown, but this Toyota is still one of the all-around best hybrids you can buy.

2019 Honda Accord Hybrid 2:23
The Honda Accord Hybrid is a great choice for a hybrid sedan. It boasts sleek styling, generous interior space and plenty of safety features. Factor in great fuel economy and pleasing performance and you have a family sedan that does just about everything well.

2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid 2:54
It's a fuel-efficient SUV, of which there are not many on the market, and the Hybrid is even better than the regular RAV4.

2019 Toyota Camry Hybrid 3:16
If you're shopping for a gas-sipping sedan, consider the Camry Hybrid. Its combination of excellent fuel economy, a smooth driving demeanor and eye-catching style helps forgive any shortcomings.

2019 Chevrolet Volt 4:24
The Chevrolet Volt should be at the top of your list if you're looking for a plug-in hybrid with extraordinary electric range. It's capable of going more than 50 miles on a charge before it switches to using gas. A sleek design and the latest tech features round out the Volt's appeal.

2019 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid 4:49
The Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid provides rare fuel-sipping transportation for seven. You give up something in the process, though — namely, Chrysler's cool second-row Stow 'n Go seats. But there's no other three-row EV or hybrid that can transport so many people in such comfort.

2019 Mini Cooper S E Countryman All4 Plug-In Hybrid 5:20
The surprisingly quick Mini Countryman S E plug-in hybrid delivers a shot of excitement to a class that's not exactly known for it. This Mini uses its plug-in hybrid system as more of a performance enhancer than a range-extender. Indeed, real-world range (electric plus gas) is rather paltry at around 240 miles, and you'll struggle to get 12 miles out of EV mode.

2019 Hyundai Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid 5:51
The Hyundai Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid is just like the regular Ioniq Hybrid, except it has a larger battery that you can recharge for a useful 29 miles of all-electric driving range. Fully charged and filled, it has the capability to travel over 600 miles.

2019 Honda Clarity Hybrid 6:09
The Honda Clarity plug-in hybrid broadens the Clarity's appeal since it used to be fuel cell-only and limited to the state of California. The Clarity PHEV is an excellent city car, with flexible cargo space and a quiet interior. But it looks like it came from a dystopian future, and its infotainment system is aging.

To me hybrids still command a initial premium that arent always recouped in a timely manner. Plug-in's definitely step that up if you can manage a good portion of your driving in pure EV mode but are still a financial premium initially. A vehicle like the RAV4 does it right when the price isnt substantially more than the base model, and adds the E-AWD which is perfect for most owners who need that little bit extra traction.

I would get fed up real fast with any form of 'plug-in'! Full Hybrid for me, Honda Insight or Hondas Accord.

Regarding fuel consumption and CO2 reduction the Diesel Hybrid of Mercedes Benz is the most reasonable solution. Available as E 300 de and C 300 de

I drive the 2019 Honda Inspire EX hybrid and I'm getting 55+ mpg's, totally awesome. I haven't driven it in cold weather yet, I've read comments that cold weather affects battery life and lowers your mileage so I'm waiting for it to get cold in Tennessee to see if I still love driving a hybrid.

I noticed you only covered Honda’s, afa hybrids go. I own a KIA NIRO!!! I absolutely love ❤️ it!!! It’s sporty & has all the bells & whistles anyone could wish for!

Be fair & do a rating for n ALL hybrid’s, not just the ones you’re connected to!!

Hey Edmunds, I guess the gas tank on the Rav4 only holding 9-10 gallons of gas (vs the 14.5 spec.) was not a factor or did you not check? We bought a 2020 Ford Escape hybrid and we love it.

Thanks for the list. I think the Chevrolet Volt and Hyundai Ioniq are my picks. Although not a huge honda fan, the Honda Accord Hybrid doesn't look too bad. Why did the Chevrolet Volt get discontinued?

@Edmunds Why do you not include Toyota Corolla HEV in the list? Very affordable with high efficiency hybrid car. Many other car testers and websites put toyota corolla hybrid on the 1st place.

I bought the Insight, I agree everything they said, I also like to seat low.
I picked the EX because it has the more mileage.

I don't know why anyone would prioritize luxury appointments over efficiency when looking at hybrid cars.

Everyone should have a HYBRID..by now, if not an electric. Kona, and Corolla are top.
