No, the battery is not designed to be removed and replaced, so if it does fail, it will need to go back to Garmin or an authorized repair center. The good news is that even if you send an out of warranty unit with lifetime maps in for repair, your replacement will still have lifetime maps.

Is it relatively easy to replace the battery when its ceases to function? This is handy to know in cases on lifetime maps updates. No goo having them if the unit only lasts a few years.

I'm not seeing that you can, no. Speed will display in the lower left corner, and you can change the lower right corner to display the direction, current time, or elevation.
