A hen in her nest 🐓

The first time I tried a cornish hen was when I was 12 years old at sleep away camp. The counselors convinced us that we were going on a “snipe hunt”. They woke us up at midnight, told us to arm ourselves with rocks and sticks, and we essentially ran around the woods hunting “snipe”, which are a small bird (which they told us were migrating through New Hampshire). Turns out there were no snipe, but I was certainly convinced. The next day they gave us, what I realize now, was each a cornish hen for dinner.

That was over 15 years ago and looking back, there must have been something illegal about the whole thing. Either way, cornish hens are delicious, basically tiny chickens that are way more juicy.

Paired with a scotch egg and a potato nest, this was a really fun dish to put together!

The snipe bird is actually where the term sniper comes from. A sniper was originally a hunter that was skilled enough to shoot one of these birds, a big honor to their skill due to how small the bird is.

I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE, when I was younger I went to a summer camp that I was dropped off at everyday, on one occasion I was sleeping in a lodge and before bed one of the councelers was going to catch a "snipe". They then got a plastic bag and plastic gloves and ran into the woods yelling and screaming. They would then come out with the bag ripped and gloves destroyed and we never saw a snipe ever.

my dad and my uncle took me and my cousin out “snipe hunting” on our land one time. where i’m from, though, snipe hunting is where you bring the person out at night, cut out the lights and run away from them. and that’s exactly what they did to me and my cousin at like 10 years old. my cousin started crying but thankfully they were a little tipsy and my uncle spilled his drink so my dad turned on the light and we caught up to them
