Oh no thats so sad. I've got a broody at the moment and thats how i found this.

I moved my broody, but i did it at night and she was settled by morning. Unfortunately moving your broody seemed to unsettle her and thats probably what went wrong. Mine was broody for nearly 2 weeks before i set eggs under her and she's done a great job of sitting on them.

I have 8 day old chicks at the moment, 2 more might hatch. Hope you have better luck next time with your broodies.

So I've had two hens that successfully got clutches of eggs to hatch (between 5 and 7 each time) five times last year. So this year one of those hens goes broody and I've had problems with her rejecting eggs/pushing them out, it's hatching day and she ate the first two eggs and discarded the shells just outside of her nest, and I'm wondering what the heck is going on. Today should be the day and she still has four eggs, so we'll see. Here's what I've learned:

1. The first time we had our buff orpington sit, she hoarded 13 eggs, we candled them at 10 days and found 8 were fertilized and growing. I think this was because she couldn't sit on that many, so I made a rule that I start a hen on 8 eggs. 7 hatched and I killed one by being bad at working a brooder. so 8 of 8 after candling.
2. The second time our buff orpington went broody, I started her with 8. candled at 10 days and 6 were fertile, I reduced her to 6 and all 6 hatched. At the same time our Americana went broody about a week behind and we spent those 14 days of overlap keeping the orpington from stealing the other eggs every time the americana got up. Americana hatched 7 of the original 9 she was put on (two infertile and removed at 10 days).
3. Skipping to this current batch. We changed the brooder coop on our orpington. There are cracks between the wood slats let more light in. she's on a hill facing the east getting morning sun. There were some extremely cold nights in late March. I would find eggs behind her and move them back around to the front of her trying to get her to warm them up again. She rejected one egg early on and then yesterday I find two egg shells, no chicks. 21 days today and its not looking good. only four eggs left. I think the geographic location matters. I think the amount of sunlight coming in matters (they prefer very dark). I think the material of there nest matters (first times it was always straw, this time it was pine shavings. Bottom line is I think I did this by changing to much on her. she needs a box WITHIN a coop to feel safe. she needs less light. My hen decides when she gets up and steps outside to eat/drink. previously I kept the food and water inside the coop so it was a short walk from her nest.

I got a broody sitting on 6 eggs I bought off eBay, it took a week to arrive and now it’s been 10 days, which means it’s day 17 for the broody hen and she seems to be getting a bit agitated, I certainly hope she doesn’t abandon the eggs as they won’t hatch until another 11 or so days!

Broody hens are the best! It is broodypolosa at my house right now! I really have found it is best if I just leave mama where she is. I mark the eggs with sharpie and check for new eggs every day. I have tried all the methods of moving with mixed results. Now I have gotten lazy (if that's even possible with our lifestyle) and just leave mamas where they set.

I feel for you 100%!! I’m going through something similar. We had 7 eggs and one 1 hatched. So now I got 3 more eggs and now she seems not so broody anymore 😩😩 wondering if maybe I can hatch them under a heat lamp??

Oh man! I have a few broody hens and would love for them to hatch some babies! We recently got an oopsie rooster in the last batch of chicks we got so I'm thinking if we still have some broodies when he is mature I might give it a try! Hopefully I can do a vlog about it too!
