"🌿Giving chicks to a broody hen🌿
.
❤️Part two in our broody educational series❤️
.
Do you have a broody who wants to become a mama? This reel will teach you how to introduce chicks to a broody mama for her to raise.
🌿
You can give chicks to a broody as early as five days into her broody cycle, this helps the hens health. Giving chicks so early in the broody cycle allows her to not stay on the nest as long. Some hens will sit for months without nourishment in hope that chicks will hatch!
🌿
It takes 21 days for fertile hatching eggs to hatch under a broody hen. Eggs can also be given but we prefer chicks because the hen still gets to fulfill her sense of wanting to become a mother and she begins to eat/drink sooner. No need to wait 21 days to give baby chicks ❤️

Not necessarily true I had five day old chicks and I put them under my broody hen about 10 o’clock at night after things had totally quieted down and she adopted them right away. I think it depends on the chicken.

If yo give the hen a chick before the eggs hatch it might think only one hatched after a week when it usually takes 3 so it might discourage her, and if she receives a chick to soon she won’t be able to care for it as well

This year, I had a broody hen with 8 chicks. My dog killed 5 of them at the same time. But I had a few chicks from the incubator, so I put them with her (they were probably older than a week, it was day time, they were outside) but the momma accepted them and raised them as her owns (It was harder for them to adapt to her, cause they were born in the incubator and lived in a box with a lamp at night😂)
