I love the priests of the SSPX. The criticism for them picking and choosing the canon laws is fair and they deservedly have taken the hit on their reputation on this. The damage is done and they need to help the victims. The most important thing now is how they will handle it in the future. They have to remove the cancer cell before it causes more damage. Some offenders don’t get another chance. A ship’s captain foolishly steers off course to sail by an island where his parents have a mansion. In so doing, he steers too close by the rocks and tears a huge gash in the hull. As the ship begins seriously listing and it’s clear she’s going down, the captain commandeers a lifeboat and flees the scene leaving the vessel to sink along with 146 souls.
Eventually, he’s captured and sentenced to 20 years in prison. He’s paroled after 16 years and behaves like a model parolee during the four years. He wishes to resum3 his old occupation for a few years before age forces his retirement. Who thinks he should be given another chance as captain? Which passengers, knowing his background, will board his ship?

I know a man, a psychologist, who worked over thirty years with pedaphiles and batterers; his reason for quitting was because he was finally convinced they were all untreatable. My point is perhaps treating those one or two timers more harshly was because after a set pattern was seen it was believed it had become an affliction/illness. Thus began the shuffling among dioceses or as least parishes. If the SSPX bought into that idea, perhaps it is the world of psychology they snuggled up with rather the Vatican.

Not sure I believe the premise. The vast majority of abuse in the Catholic Church took place long before 1983, when the 1917 code was still in place. When the abuse was reported in relation to when it actually occurred is another story; but it seems that as the incidents of reporting began to increase, the incidents of actual abuse were beginning to decrease. In light of what happened in the Catholic Church, what evidence is there to conclude that keeping the 1917 cannon would have made any difference for the SSPX?

It is a generally accepted maxim that one cannot make compromises with evil without becoming evil oneself. Seems like the SSPX may have made compromises, and if so, those compromises will have consequences.

The Code of Canon Law: obviously NOT the word of God. Can you imagine Moses coming down from Mt Sinai carrying the Code of Canon Law?

"Defect of reason" could be used to justify every sin ever committed since God created Adam. Actually, why couldn't Eve have used that excuse? Why does the SSPX adhere to that portion of Canon Law? Because someone who was and is in authority there considers it to be in his best interest, maybe when he looks into the future. Few of us take our repeated sins to the grave. Most of us have them exposed. Ex: How nice it would be if, as a bank manager, I had set up a policy where I would just be transferred to another branch if it were determined I had repeatedly embezzled money.

I think you may have described <i>mechanisms used</i> by bad bishops to excuse and get around punishing priests. I suspect that <i>good</i> bishops (however few there are) can find ways to carry out their duties to protect the faithful from predators even when the McCarrick types are acting under long habit. The problem is that most don't have the will to do it. Some don't even think the behavior is bad at all, others don't think it is very bad, and still others seemingly don't much care. Sure, some facets of those canons look like it would be hard to get rid of predators. But I imagine that good canon lawyers can sort through the appearances to come up with solutions.

This specific choice of rules based on convenience sounds out of character for the founder of the SSPX and does that point to infiltration within SSPX just as all of the other priestly, fraternities and Rome. Further, is this practice of picking and choosing the canonical codes based on a convenience part of the overall state of The entire Catholic world at the time the SSPX was established and has worsened since then. In other words, all of us poorly catechized Catholics lean further into the word than into Christ because the standards were relaxed and or never taught. I can tell you looking back at what I was taught and what I’m learning now for what should be catechism are two different things. Trying to catechize my kids with what they’re teaching in the NO church have convinced the kids that it’s too much trouble bothersome to take on the obligations of our faith it in a way that gave us so many true Saints starting with the Mass of the true church and it’s strictness and rigidity to build a solid Catholic individual.
