This is a really nice summary of the event, but I think it's fair to say that the neutron star - white dwarf merger scenario is not the preferred choice of the community, though one team did make that case. The broad (though inconclusive) consensus is that this was a neutron star - neutron star merger that presented unusually.

Above all, the thing I like best about the universe is its ability to confound our expectations 🤩

All we have to do is wait for a known neutron star to collide with a known white dwarf and we'll be able to prove that this happened or it didn't. I'm not ridiculing scientific enterprise here. I am in awe of those people who can observe and interpret and calculate their way to these amazing discoveries but isn't it really about the enormous diversity of the universe in the end that keeps it being so exciting and day after day contradicting what we thought we knew
