May I suggest that a large portion of the 70% were not taught about the Real Presence? I grew up with V2, went to “catechism, ” made first Communion, Confirmation, went to Mass (Dad’s rule) every week and holy day, but reached age 18 and knew virtually nothing about the Catholic Faith, including the Real Presence. I didn’t learn the Faith until I was age 47, having nearly given up searching for God, for Truth. During the years in between, name the Protestant church, I’d been there and left having come up short. It never occurred to me to return to the Catholic church because of my growing up “catholic.” At 47, I “stumbled” onto tradition! I can assure you, it wasn’t that I knew the dogma and rejected it, rather, I was ignorant of it. Evil Churchmen (and women) who did know and rejected it, withheld the Faith from entire generations starting with mine. (Born 1960) The Faith cannot be destroyed in souls where it was never formed. We need to start from grade one, basic catechism, the true Mass, true sacraments, teaching not only dogma but how to apply Catholic truth to everyday life. For many people born 1970’s onward, it should be investigated even if novus ordo, whether they need to be conditionally rebaptized. Make a for sure valid general confession, get Confirmed or conditionally reconfirmed as I did. Couples should make sure of their marriage, or, if need be, get married. Sadly, there are a lot of invalid marriages out there due to highly dubious annulments, mere civil divorces and remarriages. There’s a need for Catholic re-education classes and camps! Also, Catholic social and sometimes material support for people to save their souls because everything in the world mitigates against it, more so than in previous times.

I attended the Eucharistic Congress. There was absolutely some cringe there. But on the whole, the call was for personal repentance, greater reverence, and greater unity among the faithful. You are such a gift; don't waste your gift on inflammatory news reports. If anything, this will lead hundreds, if not thousands, to push for greater faith. Thank you for your gift, and I pray for our unity in the body of Christ. R
