Todd walks us through how to properly execute the XY miking technique for acoustic guitar, dialing the right balance between the instrument and the room. None of the audio has gone through post-production. To talk more about how to set up XY mics or the Telefunkens we used call 919.682.5552. Thank you for watching!

Excellent tutorial, informative on how to find the sweet spot. I think however, the more distant placement sounded wonderful, despite the reflective room.

Hi Todd, you might want to look at the camera instead of Sean since you're supposed to be explaining this stuff to us.
Pretty informative video still, looking forward to the next!

Do you realize your recordings in the video are coming out mono, not stereo? So much for a X/Y demo.

I'm sorry- there are some things I did not understand:

- Does on mic point to the 12th fret and one to the body? Or did you aim with the imaginary center line between the mic to the fretboard?
- Is it really stereo? I don't hear any depth of stereo field.

Hey Todd, for recording solo acoustic guitar... what is your preference, a M60 FET Cardioid Stereo Set or KM184 stereo set ?

A little bassy, but a smidge of EQ would sort that out. I would have moved it a little more to the fretboard sound

not only is this recording in mono, but XY works best if you're 6-10 feet away from the source. can't believe how many people are watching those YouTube videos and learning the WRONG way

Put a ribbon on it. They do better for strings.
