Fade Transparency using Transparent shader and Dithering Transparency using Opaque shader.
Dithering Transparency is especially good on performance. Be aware though, that too many opaque dithering objects can still be heavy on performance for mobiles. You might want to test out what works best for your game.

How can I make the square transparent but with a black edge? I have tried a few approaches and the problem at the moment is that as soon as I make it transparent, the edge also feels the square with colour, although the edge should only be affected.
