Training a puppy or dog is a hard job for anyone but when they reach the teenage stage it is very challenging to know what to do with it and not to make the mistakes everyone makes.

The teenage stage is so much harder because you think you were 'there' after all this time training their puppy, and now it's like your dog is just flipping you off... Hormones, and a much stronger dog, plus a tired owner who thought the puppy phase was the toughest makes that this is the stage where people give up. Thank you so much for this video.

This is exactly were we are at with our doberman. He is a great dog and even he is a pain in the back at this point and it's exactly as described it seems all his training is gone. The biggest challenge yet is other people out there who constantly try to interfere or judge when we are training. Or try to pet him and encourage things we don't want like jumping. Even it says in the dog in big red letters " in training do not touch do not distract"

Is there a better channel for informative, tried and true info for all things people/dog related? I'll answer, NO! Thanks Will.

Great advice.... We follow you closely, with our 2 American Akitas now aged 7 months. I've learnt more from you than the hundreds we paid at 'puppy classes' 😳

Thanks for this! I have a 1 y.o. tiny dog, super socialized to be a good urban dog, and she's just starting to be a bit reactive... which is what I've worked so hard to avoid. She'd also be a good bomb sniffer or the like, because (like the ones I've seen) she's obsessed with throw toys. I will now bring a soggy toy with me as I continue her endless social neighbourhood exposure, and hopefully dial back the forming reactivity.
Meanwhile, a neighbour just got a puppy and apparently thinks they can just slot it into their busy lives, in a condo, with zero prep or understanding of its needs. So far they are on their way to an unhappy, anxious dog. (I have said something, which they may or may not have taken in.) Give me strength.

Yup. Very much yes. I have a hunting lab/show Golden mix, as a service dog in training and he's 14 months now. Just started puberty. He's extremely high drive (which I wanted, not only for his service dog career but also because I do lots of dog sport with him.) He has three major issues with his hormones, but overall his obedience is stellar, he's incredibly calm on the job and an absolute havock during free time. He leaves almost every GSD or Hova in our club in his shadow when it comes to drive, speed and perfomance. In his freetime he's very hectic on walks atm, very socially and sexually motivated, constantly in a rush, BUT obviously trying to be focused and obedient and follows every command. His self-control is amazing and I know when to use management to make his life easier.

Thank you for this video! I was starting to feel like I was going crazy with all the up and down days during this phase! Between you and another trainer I listen to, I just need to keep at it! Thank you for explaining this and renewing my determination to stay patient with my dog! And that it's going to be ok lol

Brilliant, as always! Every dog owner should have to see this. Many use "they're still young" as an excuse.

Wonderful advice! And your tip to take it "one day at a time" is a great one especially when they are driving us nuts. I have always preferred protective breeds and learned a long time ago that the ones who push/annoy the most as teenagers always become my favorite dogs as adults. ::)

This video has come just at the right time for my Labradoodle pup Daisy. She is twenty months and going through the teenage stage, she is so cheeky. She was doing really well with recall and retrieving and suddenly she won't come back to me. She pinched a ball off another dog and it took me twenty minutes to get it back. The owner of the other dog was not amused. Anyway she is back on the long lead and ongoing training. Thanks for the tips. 😊

In the US, we have our pet dogs spayed and neutered. That helps quite a lot.

Thank you for this video!! I needed that pep talk today as I have a very strong willed but very well behaved 1 year and 2 months old Rhodesian Ridgeback and he’s definitely going through that phase lately! It’s really hard to stay calm at times when he’s pretending to not understand or hear me… I’m a feisty French Canadian and when he’s defiant, it’s hard to remain patient! Lol!! I just have to keep up the daily training and remember that this phase will pass!! So thx again for the pep talk/reminder!! 🙏❤️😉

Thank you Will, I am so in that stage with my year old Border Collie.
I stay focused and calm whilst training. Every day is different with Doobie, your videos have helped so much.

Perfectly describes the stage my daughter’s dog is going through. A sweet and social dog with good manners and on lead obedience turned into an aggressive dog attacker. 16 months old a switch flipped and I think it’s a stage she can work through, she thinks it’s permanent. I’ll have her watch this and hopefully she’ll get back on track

I can honestly say that this program is the best thing that has ever happened to me and my furry friend.

I'm so glad I found this channel. I have a one year old GSD and he drives me nuts some days. Other days he does fine. This channel has definitely opened my eyes on how I'm messing up. He is my first dog on my own so it's been a huge learning experience for both of us

Solid advice! I’d like to add that the brain development can also cause dog to forget previously taught commands. No need to be angry just start from beginning

And special note to people with aggressive breeds, you can't leave them off-leash to attack other dogs. Long line, under control @all times! So many clueless owners distracted by their dang phones.
