As an instructor I can say this is one of the best youtube tutorials for improving intermediate riding. Some of these drills are exactly what you would practice in lessons with an instructor critiquing you! I actually use a flexible fiberglass stick for beginner riders to initiate turns with and to improve balance. The 3 hop unhill on heel edge and 3 hop downhill on toe edge is new to me but going to be a future favorite for warming up myself and clients, this might be the best tip in the video for improving the stutter stops described and shown.

Been snowboarding for 11 years and its my first time hearing some of these, and I for sure do a couple of them lol, but I'll change that this winter

I think the main reason people counter rotate is because they want to keep looking down the slope at all times, so looking left or right while turning doesn't feel very natural at first. But that's how it's done!!! Great video.

I've been riding for about 18 years, and I'm generally comfortable up to double black runs. I watched your video and saw my own habits in the counter-rotating section, especially when the run gets steep. I never really felt comfortable on my toe edge on steep runs, and only went there briefly before retreating to the safety of my heel edge. Today I put two and two together after watching your video and I tried committing to turning my hips around when on my toe edge. All of a sudden I have much more control and I'm having way more fun. Thank you! That was exactly what I needed.

I find this kind of video more thrilling than those "GO BIG" GoPro videos or pro videos, because its very relatable and honestly the joy of snowboarding for the average rider is connecting with the board on the slopes. It's a feeling of control and enjoying the mountain that makes snowboard so fun! And the progression comes not in doing massive tricks or having the coolest run, but in mastering each step. Most people can get into snowboarding if they learn these basics!

Most instructors NEVER tell you about counter rotation, but I was really lucky because mine told me from the beggining to be careful with that, and everyday I see ppl rotating their bodies like freaking helicopters...

I've started snowboarding 3 years ago and I get myself coming back to watch this video over and over again. Every time it reminds me how to snowboard like a pro and motivates me to keep progressing. Hands down to one of the best snowboard tutorials that I have ever seen!

This video clip changed my life. I did not know I hunched over whenever I was doing toe turns. I feel so much more stable now. I can make turns effortlessly. Thanks for the awesome video tutorial!!!

THANKS FOR THIS!
My girl and I watched this video and your tips have reignited our love for snowboarding. We were stuck and not getting any better. 2 weeks ago, we went on a Monday and had the slopes to ourselves... We practiced the drills and (literally) re-learned how to distribute our weight, make turns, ride our edges, etc. After two days on the slopes, we both ride smoother, more confidently, and faster.

The other fun thing to do now is watch other people riding and see how 90% of snowboarders do it wrong. Counter-rotation and uncentered hips being the biggest mistakes.

Thank you for giving all of us riders a comprehensive and well explained method for true carving.
I am 69 years of age, switched form skiing to boarding 25 years ago. Still riding, still learning. Thank you!!

Probably the best, I mean the best intermediate snowboarding video ever. Clear, concise and I think captures the foundations of moving to advanced riding

I love how this video shows both the correct and incorrect way of each of these exercises. The problem with a lot of snowboarding tutorials is they tell you the correct way of doing something, but don’t explain what you could be doing wrong in the first place so you don’t exactly know what it is you need to fix. This video explained everything perfectly and I can’t wait to take this advice to the slopes!

I've really got to thank you for this video. I just got back out on the slopes for the first time in seven years, after suffering a pretty bad injury. I watched this video several times before going back out -- practiced the stance as shown around 3:50, adjusted my bindings for more forward lean, and visualized rotating my whole body through turns. (When I broke my arm, I was definitely counter-rotating on a toe-side turn. Caught the heel edge, and boom.) Well, my return to the slopes was fantastic. I felt confident and in control through my turns, and also able to identify some problems with my technique and address them as they were happening. I have a lot more to learn and a lot of practice to do, but this was exactly what I needed to get back on the right foot.
