Keep cool without air conditioning this summer and save money at the same time. Will a homemade AC unit work to beat the summer heat and can frozen underwear keep you cool?

How small channels are better than big ones

Don't use ice cubes. Use frozen water bottles. Turn the fan on low. Keep the water bottles (1 to 3) close to you (about 2 ft.) and the fan further away (8 or 10 ft.). Keep spares in the freezer. Change as needed. Your not cooling the room. Your cooling you. You'll still be hot but you won't be dead.
Edit: make sure the bottles are in a pan to catch condensation.

I live in Arizona too. I freeze water in a water bottle and place it on the carotid artery in my neck and/or the femoral artery in side my thighs (a Big Gulp works good here especially in the car). By cooling these main arteries, the cooled blood gets circulated, and thus the whole body gets cool. (I slip a clean sock over the bottle to absorb condensation and to protect the skin on my neck from frost bite.) This also works for those neck wraps. I freeze them, but when I tie it around my neck I make sure that it's tight enough to be touching the carotid arteries. As an engineer, I'm surprised you didn't think of this one. (Actually, I discovered this method by analyzing the Big Gulp between the legs method, because my Dad's truck didn't have A/C nor a cup holder.) Stay Cool. xoxo

Place a tent in the location you spend most of your time and focus your cooling device primarily on chilling the tent.

Tried most of that in the past.. the ultimate best is the window fan... blow in when temp is below 75-78 and blow out when it's above 80.. works real good but when it's impact runs its course, you've got no other choice than to crank up the AC or put on frozen clothes.. My problem with the ice is it makes the room more humid

Aside from the music being too loud, this is better than a lot of the bigger channels on YouTube.

Try sleeping on a hammock... it is much cooler than on a bed. Just make sure the hanging supports in your bedroom are strong enough to hold your weight. Also, for high humidity places, try using a dehumidifier. Even if the temperature doesn’t drop, sucking that moisture out of the air makes a world of difference. Btw, I hate when it’s hot and humid and I’m a spring, fall and winter lover ☺️

It’s so hot that the glass of water next to my bed has become warm.

First... leave home as soon as it seems a bit warm... turn on the AC in the car. Only visit or shop in air conditioned environments the ENTIRE day until you see that the temperature is dropping... then .. get home right before it cools off enough for the neighbors to turn off their AC .. you want to capture their last blasts of cool air leaking into the hallway. The hallway will be cool because the ac air was moving into the hallway... leave your apartment door open to allow the cool air to rush into your home. Then close the door. Repeat...

Wish I had a better way as well. The mild-ish winters here in South Georgia save me money as I enjoy the cold. My electric bill usually hovers around the 50-60 dollar range, but the summers are brutal - made worse by horrible humidity that can make 76 feel like 86. To keep from hemmoraging money I raise the temperature when I’m not at home to around 78 degrees. Then I drop it a couple degrees when I get home and then drop it some more when the sun goes down so the unit doesn’t have to work as hard to keep cool. Doing this, I usually keep my bill under 100 dollars except on the hottest of months when it goes a little over. Ceiling fans are a must and are in every room of my house except the bathroom. The only other bit of advice is to just try and get your body to acclimate to a higher temperature. Right now I’m struggling because our weather is a bit bipolar and fluctuates madly as we head into spring. Cotton clothing and meal prepping or using a crockpot to reduce generating heat also helps some. Oh, and I’m not an engineer or mechanic but I’ve heard that keeping your AC unit in some shade helps as it allows it to draw in cooler air (not 100% sure as this could just be guessing) as well as having heat reflective paint on your roof. I don’t know why on earth black is still the preferred colored roofing tile down here. Just cooks the homes. My aunt swears by her attic fan as well.

I also have solar blocking curtains, leave cold water in the bathtub to help cool the bathroom, hang cold and wet laundry in the house to dry near a fan, and use ice packs under my clothes.

night time.Use a mist sprayer to dampen a sheet on your bed, tun a fan on get under the sheet and the fan will evaporate the water taking your heat with it. I think this technique originates from Texas. you can have the fan plugged into timer socket and have the fan go on an off periodically through the night to economize

Modern AC systems are not so bad with energy consumption as the older ones. You can get one now that uses much less power and can keep your place comfy, if you have good insulation. And they are getting better all the time.

Hey!
I lived in a garage-type of building for a while, in Stockholm.
The building was poorly insulated and had a black, flat, roofing.
On really hot summer days i sprayed a layer of water, using the garden hose, on the roof. The rapid vaporization of the water on the roof cost energy and therefore reduces the temperature. Actually worked quite nicely.

Fun video, and useful. I'm considering getting a few of those silver reflective windshield screens and putting some velcro strips on them so I can easily put them up on the windows that get the most blazing sun in the morning, and remove and fold them up when they're in shade. Seems like it'd help block more sun than the shades I've got and retain more of the coolness from the night. I do use the trick with the box fan, and have a portable AC. Just ordered a second one. Have I mentioned I hate the heat?

Keeping your light off during the day helps a lot! Drinking cold water helps you stay cooler and hydrated! When you body heat goes up, the water helps it cool down.
