The mention of Saudi Arabia often has people envisioning an oil-rich, nearly empty desert, where Islam originated. An exhibit in Washington, D.C., offers insight into the real history of the Arabian Peninsula, focusing on its pre-Islamic role as a trade route, the influence of nearby cultures, and the evolution of language. VOA's Faiza Elmasry reports.

This actually looks fascinating. Too bad Saudi Arabia censors pretty much anything before Islam. Even the Islamic stuff looks pretty cool though.

Destroying in this case has 2 meanings:
1. Get rid of something realy bad and change with the good one.
2. Erase the past so there is no evidences and no chance for people to compare the past and the present condition.

It saddens me as an Arab from the Arabian peninsula that our pre Islamic history wasn't preserved. Besides some poems, tribe names and wars little is preserved and much less is documented or written about.

How insecure would you need to feel in your beliefs to destroy relics of a civilisation that no longer exists.

To clarify : The original Arabs are only the Saudis and our neighboring countries the Arabian Gulf states . the other Arab countries are not Arabs, but the remnants of the Persians and the Romans, and some of them are Canaanites, Assyrians, Arameans and different races .

Odds are, only wealthy Saudis will see and appreciate these things, which they generally already know, because they often study abroad and are exposed to more open history in general. The poor, chained to superstition and fear, enslaved by burdensome traditions will not and they never question the rightfulness of the Saudi regime over them (unless they're Shia Muslims), but even they would reject their pagan past - strangely while the rest of the world now re-joins itself to the rich, vibrant spirituality of their ancestors, whether for scholarly or spiritual edification. Oppression has many cons.
