*NOT to say Telegram is right choice for encryption* (have never recommended it as a superior option and criticized it in the past here).

Reporting on the story. Could set dangerous precedent for companies providing platform involving encryption - and another reason you should be using less centralized options..

For instance, one charge was "distributing encryption without declaration" - this is concerning, and hopefully, not a sign of things to come for those w/believe in freedom (aka privacy).

pavel is not entirely innocent. he loved a comfortable lifestyle in dubai and elsewhere due to past questionable business deals. funny how he became a representative of free speech here, when that is a separate argument altogether. rumours of telegram backdoored by russia may have had some merit as protesters were arrested early on when their only communication was with that platform. free speech is important and the choice of platforms, however not private they may be, but putting him on a platform as a representative of free speech is sus. he may speak for it because it is convenient for his situation but not entirely out of integrity.

To sign up for Telegram it requires a phone # and you can only sign up via mobile application you cant via desktop at all so I would say its NOT private.
