A little tip for everyone who is doing this for the first time: first remove the thermal paste from the heatsink, so you are a bit more prepared when removing it from the cpu

Why didn't you put the heatsink upside down? Now there's thermal paste on the table

AMD users, don't follow this guide; twist the cooler & also warm up the CPU beforehand if you can to avoid the CPU from ripping off the socket.

AM4 Users, twist and wiggle the Heat Sink off, or you will yank the processor clean off, and that can leave you with bent, broken, and or missing pins, and i mean it when i say, thats a bitch to fix

Just saw this as I’m about to reapply thermal paste bc my cpu is running slightly hotter than I’d like. Thanks dude!!

CAUTION: Do not remove a CPU cooler for an AMD CPU this way. AMD sockets use PGA instead of LGA, which means that you could pull your processor out from its socket and bend pins.

Warm up the processor for a couple minutes, then shut your PC back off, unscrew your cooler, then twist the CPU cooler from left to right until you feel the contact between your CPU and the cooler loosen, then start to twist L/R and lightly start pulling it away from the motherboard at the same time. It should then essentially pop right off and you can clean your processor from there.

I expected one of those nightmarish memes where they drill holes in the socket. Thank you, algorithm for not ruining my sleep again.

Quick Question, does pure alcohol work?

One question. Does it really need isopropyl alcohol to rub the old thermal paste? If yes which % should it be?
