The Low Iron Low Thyroid Connection

Показать описание
If you have hypothyroidism you should be aware of the connection between low thyroid states and iron absorption. In low thyroid states, iron absorption is compromised which means you are at higher risk for developing iron deficiency. And because iron is required for thyroid hormone function, iron deficiency negatively impacts thyroid function. This vicious cycle continues on and on until you break it. If you have hypothyroidism make sure you test your iron level! You can do this by testing for ferritin, serum iron, TIBC, and % saturation. If you find that your iron level is low, make sure to replace it.

What happens when the iron level is normal but the saturation is low?

Beware that FERRITIN levels might be FALSE due to inflammation in body or NAFL - Look for the symptoms instead of numbers. Hashimotos could be triggered by IRON DEFICIENCY- My Ferritin (and hemoglobin) levels were fine but I had ALL the symptoms and couldn’t breathe - elevated high blood pressure and pale fingernails and gums. When I started taking iron supplements and eating meat, my symptoms of Hashimotos and iron deficiency SUBSIDED- Hashimotos (elevated TPO, low T4, nodules etc) could be from iron deficiency and therefore it can be REVERSED 😳!!! Remember that you don’t test iron on a cellular level - only blood which is inaccurate- especially ferritin that is often elevated by inflammation in the body

Yeah ...but....when you have low metabolism - and constantly starving yourself to not get huge ...of course your iron is going to need low....especially if your a menstruating female or have adverse reactions to iron supplements ( which is very commom). It's a conundrum.

And at what time or how would I take iron supplement correctly?

Should you avoid DHEA and or Testosterone HRT if you're taking and iron supplement if you have an underactive thyroid? And what if you have high cholesterol and or HCT? What if all of them are off balance? Should taking thyroid medication be the first priority?

I think I might have this problem. In my blood work, I have low ferritin but high iron serum. I noticed I seem to feel better when I take iron supplements. But I suppose I should monitor my bloodwork regularly to avoid hemochromatosis which I'm genetically susceptible.

In December my ferritin was low, then in March it was normal (ran by 2 different labs). I'm hypo but pretty much optimal and have been having anemia symptoms with normal blood rates for over a year. Is it possible to be anemic with normal blood levels? Can anemia come and go or fluctuate? Thanks!
