I agree, though, in my personal experience, not developing worlds enough slows me down much more than focusing on worldbuilding at the expense of writing. Probably it is because when I focus on developing my world I get inspired to start writing about it (just like with outlining), and when I lack any details I get hopelessly stuck. But I also don't think that "finish your worldbuilding first" is a good piece of advice. I really like combining approaches and prepare as much as I need to start feeling confident in this world, but then improvise as I write.

I’ve heard a different take on “write what you know” when it means to write a theme you know or have experienced—grief, hope, struggle, etc. I thought it was an interesting angle, and absolutely writing is an amazing way to work through your experience with those things, but I also think we write to discover these things for ourselves whether we’ve lived it or not. We write grief before we understand it in order understand. Or something like that, haha. And even themes one hasn’t personally dealt with in their life can be researched and studied. So stepping outside your comfort zone when it comes to emotions and themes too 👏🏻

I love this. I especially like the part on 'show don't tell.' Too many people don't quite get what it means. It's something we all struggle with, but yeah, imagine what a slog to read, let alone write, a book with nothing but showing. I don't have time for that, either reading or writing.

“Finish world building first.” Wow, I would NEVER finish a story, ever. It’s such an ongoing thing!

"If you haven't done something for the first time, in a long time, then it's about time." I like that.
Also, do you have any tips on outlining? I tend to struggle with creating an outline and therefore don't develop my ideas as much I should.

I've seen your pen name advice in action! Nora Roberts is a very popular romance writer, but she also writes mystery thrillers under the pen name J.D. Robb. Now I want a pen name.😂 Great intro, by the way!!

HUGE pet peeve LOL...oh, and world building black hole syndrome! As true for screenplay writing and well as for novels. Carnegie Hall, yeah. Good channel...look forward to more tips and tricks!

Ah, yes, the worldbuilding trap. I know that one all too well. Before NaNoWriMo knocked some sense into me and told me to just start writing, I spent almost an entire year just worldbuilding things that don’t even matter to the plot of the actual story! I can’t believe that anyone would say to completely finish your worldbuilding before writing. It did nothing but slow me down and complicate things unnecessarily. I even noticed that when I stopped stressing over worldbuilding and starting writing the story, the worldbuilding came so much easier and more naturally.

I love this series and hope you’ll continue making these videos!

Odd that I haven't heard a few of these. 😂 Maybe I've just kept in really good writing circles.

Great video, as alway's.
Oof I feel for your friend who's been worldbuilding for years.
If I can give a little bit of advise for those who care;
Write down some important "world things" (the rules of the world and important people or cities that have influince on the world)
And put this in a document you can edit as you go. Check back on it or work on it only if you need to.
If you write every little detail of a city, their history and culture, but your main characters will only spend a day in, it wasn't worth it. Al that information is either going to end up in the trash or you wil force it down the readers throat, and no one likes that.
