This method does not work anymore for newer 2.8 viewers!
Solution answer:
First get the image
go to to options select :Alpha blend:
Go to node editor
add a mix shader - principal to bottom shader slot - add - transparent shader- plug into top slot - take image alpha - plug into factor slot.
you now have a transparent png picture.

i had followed this tutorial and every single time, it would not give me the same result you got when you simply clicked "alpha blend"
great tutorial, but will need updating since the latest 2.8 blender dont seem to work with this anymore, atleast mine never did and i used three different 2.8 builds.

I was thinking you were going to apply this image as a sort of decal on a plane or something. I would like to know how to do that. How do you layer that on top of the base texture?

How do you CREATE a transparent image as an export from blender. I thought making a PNG export from the renderer would treat any area with no objects as "Transparent" but that apparently isn't the case.

one problem that i have and could not find in 2.8 is fading planes like these to transparency in 2.8. In 2.79 it seems to work but I could not get it to work in 2.8. I assume it was a bug but maybe you can help me..?
