Your last pet peeve example reminded me of a negative Harry Potter review I read once, where they accused J. K. Rowling of copying Stephenie Meyer (who published her books after Rowling) because Sirius Black could turn into a dog, and he had the same last name as Jacob Black, who can turn into a wolf 😂 I still think about that review sometimes and laugh my ass off.

"This book is trash. Don't waste your time. Did not finish" Super helpful review lol

I really hate it when I see people give a book they haven’t read, and heard a few things that they didnt like about it from other people, a low rating and try to justify their rating. Its very unfair and happens a on Goodreads.

My biggest review pet peeve is when a book that has just been announced gets a bunch of five-star reviews from fans of the author, despite the fact that there’s no way they’ve actually read it.

I guess the same could be said for people bombarding books with one-star reviews because they dislike the author’s previous books. It’s so weird to see hundreds of reviews for a book that hasn’t even sent out ARCs yet.

Oh my. I can't stand people who rate books they haven't read.
That being said, I find that a lot of people are unable to differentiate between their personal taste and objective criticism. For example, just because you hate slow-paced plots it doesn't mean the book is "badly written".
Another example of this (and one that I see ALL THE TIME even with professional critics) is when someone is so obviously biased against genres and regularly targets books for having the typical elements of its genre. Like saying a crime novel is unoriginal trash because it follows a policeman investigating a serial killer. Or complaining that the romance takes over the plot of a romance book. Like
Obviously, being 100% objective is impossible, but at least have some level of self-awareness. I myself will never review something like Star Wars because I just hate space operas, and I'm still going to hate it even if it's well done.

I love these pet peeve videos and the funny one star reviews. Cracks me up. I have rarely ever given a book a one star, I save those for books I just couldn’t get through, which has rarely happened in my whole life.

_"It's a different book!"_ Haha!

I agree with the points you made, but it can be difficult to rate or critique the writing in my opinion, particularly when you haven't researched what makes for the different writing styles and techniques and are just a reader. Not that it's impossible, bit it's a bit more technical and one needs some sort of background knowlegde so as to be able to explain why they didn't enjoy a certain writing style.
When rating purely on enjoument, I think it means that you feel that way regardless of the writing style. Again, sometimes it can be hard to explain why it didn't click with you. Being a mood reader also affects one's opinion of a book and its writing style.

Some book reviewers passive aggressively insult people who like the book they didn’t as well as the author

I hate it when people give a book 1 star even though thy only read the first chapter and didn’t like it. How can you give a 500 page book 1 star after reading 20 pages?! So annoying.

Hahaha so many good points! I think the only time I mention writing in a review is to go ‘for me it was too descriptive but you might really enjoy that’.

I don’t like it when reviewers start bashing the author personally because of things the characters do or believe. It doesn’t mean the author is that way (although sadly sometimes they are). It’s called fiction people!!

You should do a video on the things you can consider when writing a review. For me personally, I just write whatever comes to mind but I've been meaning to maybe make a template for myself. I think it would be a good way to reflect back on what is read or to think about while you're reading.

My biggest book review pet peeve is when people give a synopsis of the book in their review! (This particularly applies to GR) I am on the page for a book and I read the synopsis provided and am interested in seeing what other people thought, so I scroll down to read some reviews...and what do I get??? A bunch of reviews giving out summaries of the book!! WHY? There is already a provided synopsis I just don't get the point of it lol. Not to mention they usually spend 2 paragraphs summarizing the book and then 3 sentences on their actual review lol...hopefully I am not the only one who finds this annoying lol

Isn’t enjoyment a huge part of a book review? What are your thoughts?

The first pet peeve you brought up I was literally thinking about while driving today. And then I started to think “what constitutes good writing?” Like for example one of my favorite books, Requiem for a Dream, is arguably atrociously written. However, the writing is just stylized and goes against the grain of “normal, concise, well structured” writing.

I hate it when I look through reviews on Amazon and someone rates a book low because the book was damaged in shipping. 🙄. It has nothing to do with the content! Amazon will replace it no problem... every time I see it I think that someone over the age of 40 wrote it and just didn't understand what the review is actually for

My number one book review pet peeve is when people really like the book that they are reviewing, they give it 5 stars, omg it is so good, people need to read it, it's amazing, best book ever, genius, please buy the book today, please pick it up from your TBR right this second, this was my review bye... And I just don't know what made the book that good because all they said was that they really liked it...

I know I’ve personally talked about writing style in my reviews. Sometimes certain styles just don’t click. But I try to explain why it didn’t appeal to me because just saying “it sucks” isn’t exactly great writing in and of itself.

Interesting video, excited for part 2!

I guess the issue is that rating a book is a pretty subjective experience. Some people, like me, rate purely on an enjoyment level while others rate on a more on rating the technical aspects that make up a story and how the writer actually writes.

I think a lot of discord is when these two types of reviewers meet. A more technical reviewer might be aghast with how many 5 stars I give out while I might think some are too harsh. Both are valid ways of reviewing.

I do feel like as a community we have to understand more of other people's POV and we will never interpret books (or situations) the same. Doesn't make their opinions less valid. Especially when we speak about authors using harmful stereotypes and ist/-phobic language.
