Oooh! And the high temps of atmospheric entry could meld the otherwise loose materials into a solid mass that then slams into the planet? It would not surprise me at all. Molten shell carries the weight of the other materials, which scatter when the total mass slams into the ground? Would explain why all we find of large meteors (meteorites?) is small bits and pieces.

This strangely makes sense to me. That it's fluffy until our gravity and heat from entering our atmosphere solidifies it.

How would they know the density w/o someone there to feel it?
I get that something could be determined by how it landed, but unless they gathered the consistency from samples it brought back (which I don’t think it did), seems like conjecture.
