Plot twist: It's a long lost chunk of earth

If a random asteroid actually is from a water world and has organic compounds, that is great news that water and organics are extremely common

I'm more impressed with the insane calculations involved with getting that probe to land on the surface in the first place. Wild

The way she explains it it just makes people excited and I hope it gets people excited about such things

If we learned anything from the sulphur discovery on Mars, it’s that we may not understand the origins of many of the minerals we are finding out there… while this may have come from an ocean planet, it also may have just been an asteroid its entire existence, created in conditions we don’t understand yet. Science is freaking awesome.

I love your enthusiastic clear explanations, Alexandra. Please keep it up.

When I was a kid, water was considered rare in space. How cool to see an ocean floor literally be floating around in it.

the most insane part for me is landing a spacecraft in outer space on an asteroid 10x faster than a bullet. in comparison that is like an ant achieving the same thing as landing on a bullet taking a chunk out and saying in Korean "I see, it is made out of lead"

Theia chunk...
If people do not know. Theia is the planet that smashed into Earth while it was forming and in turn mixed the planet and that is one of the reason the core of Earth is not as uniformed as Venus or Mars. Maybe also a key reason to why it is not dead, like Venus or Mars.

okay that's actually pretty awesome news, thank you

It's been known that comets have water ice and all sorts of other ices: CO2, NH3, CH4, and lots of almost organic tarry stuff & ketones, aldehydes, PAH, amino acids, and tholins.
Valuable tasty stuff for builders of space colonies.

I can remember when you'd hear about things like this on the news. Bring back science reporting.

I absolutely love how exited you are about space! I have lost some of my passion for it over the years. But you are reminding me go exiting it is

Anyone else hoping that that green stuff was going to be Kryptonite?

This is probably how we'll first confirm extraterrestrial life. We'll take a sample like this and it'll have fossils in it. Likely microscopic fossils. Maybe not as exciting as what most people imagine, but equally as important.

I really think they should name asteroids after ice cream flavors. People would pay more attention.

Make's me wonder if Theia was a water planetoid when it hit Earth and created the moon. Meaning, the water we have on the Earth wasn't from the Late Heavy Bombardment, but rather transferred from the water world that was Thea.
