0:00 - Intro

We're all beginners at some point. And there are many things on the guitar you can learn right from the beginning that will help avoid future roadblocks. Ayla Tesler-Mabe shares FOUR things she wishes she knew when she was a beginner guitarist.

0:58 - Tip 1: Practice Minor Pentatonic Scales

One scale worth knowing that you can immediately incorporate in your playing is the minor pentatonic scale. Ayla explains how to play them and how they can be moved around to use in any key.

4:34 - Tip 2: Practice Vibrato

Adding vibrato is like adding a layer of expression and overall takes your playing to a whole new level. Practicing this technique helps you find your voice on the instrument!

6:07 - Tip 3: Practice Major Scales

Playing major scales is a great exercise for dexterity, but more importantly, it helps you understand how the guitar is laid out. Ayla gives a quick lesson on what intervals are and how they apply to the major scales and the guitar.

10:44 - Tip 4: Practice Music

The main reason you picked up the guitar was to play music, right? Ayla’s final tip is to find a song you love that uses a technique you want to learn and learn it!

The hardest thing for me personally was figuring out WHAT to practice and HOW to properly practice it.

As someone who’s taken many guitar lessons over the past 40 years, the advice for beginners in this video NAILED IT better than it had ever been presented to me, and I’ve had a few famous teachers.

You are an excellent communicator. I started playing guitar when I was 15. I’m 52 now. I can play a decent rhythm and take a lead, but felt like I hit a roadblock a long, long time ago. Your videos inspire me to practice and improve. You are the best guitar teacher I ever had. Thank you.

I love how she supports and tries to teach beginners, instead of bashing people for being beginners 😩

Learned more about guitar playing in half-an-hour watching a few of Ayla's excellent videos than I have in 30 years of struggling to play. Best teacher EVER!

3:35 Okay now I'm never forgetting this scale ever 😂😂. Also besides that, this has to be one of the most informative yet simple beginner guitar videos I've ever watched and having Ayla's warm energy is a plus.

I've been playing for over 10 years and am technically beyond these scales, but I never had the theory background. That interval exercise is a paradigm shift for me lol

My guitar teacher made me name my notes outloud when playing sheet music.

That really helped me learn theory.

Ayla is such a great human being. I've been watching her since the first guitar covers, then Calpurnia, then Ludic and now she's on her solo career and I wish the best of luck for her in the music scene. But she's a natural teacher, I hope she never stops enlightening us! ❤

I really like how calm you are and the fact that you take your time showing everything. So many teachers on here start off slow then all of a sudden take off leaving you wondering “what did he just do? What? Wait, let me rewind.” I like your style, thank you!

My tip would be start using Pinky finger..& 12th / 20th position right away but slowly don't wait ❤❤❤❤

Ayla, you are so much wiser and thoughtful beyond your age! You have a unique gift in your ability to teach and communicate. Thank you so much for sharing your true appreciation and love of music. Stay well and continue to enjoy your passion!

I never did tip #4 to play music, so I would never finish a lesson program because I would get bored of just doing scales.

Wow this girl is a great teacher. Most of the guitar teachers on YouTube make everything too complicated. She explained everything so clearly and gave me some more ideas for my playing too. This is the way to teach!
