How To Deal With Intense Feelings (Do This When You're Triggered!) | Control Your Emotions

Release Emotions with Somatic Processing

When you are intensely triggered, you might not be in a position to analyze yourself and find the root cause of why you were triggered if the emotion is very intense. It might be better to practice somatic processing, a way to witness your emotions which will help you dis identify from the emotion and reduce the painful sensations in your body. Practice makes perfect, so every trigger is an opportunity to get curious about your emotions and discover that they are merely uncomfortable sensations in your body.

The somatic processing course and the post traumatic growth course (my most favorite course) go into detail with this stuff!

It’s very hard for me to even think clearly when I’m triggered. Even when I take a moment to feel my feelings, my mind is flooded with the worst case scenario & I feel out of control. ):

Doing this has changed my life! Just noticing and sitting WITH it

That study explains why the evidence doesn't land when we are triggered. The prefrontal cortex isn't online. We can't do thought reprogramming when triggered.

since becoming AP secure my initial reaction to a trigger is to stop and maybe even take a step back. I realize I don't want to respond with an overly emotional knee jerk but a thoughtful process and healthy response. I had the opportunity to do this yesterday. WOW! I thought something was going to happen that I didn't want to happen. Somehow I started down the AP rabbit hole of "what if" and realized that I'd and triggered myself beforehand to go through scenarios in my head so I could be prepared when it happened. I don't know what made me do it but the thing I feared happened and I handled it!! Shaky start but it ended well. Thank you. These tools and videos always have nuggets of gold. This one in particular! You are my HERO!!

Good morning Thais, thank you for this video. I can definitely relate to being “primitive” when I’m anxious, trigged, upset or angry. I look back and think “why do I act like that” and then it happens again, it’s frustrating to know and see but can be so hard to stop it before it starts

Great analogy about the friend scrolling through social media.

Cool to hear the study. Whilst i know it intellectually, I can tend towards talking it out or soothing by distraction. I know that doesn't usually help me! It would be really interesting to repeat that study but scan the brains of people different attachment styles. To see what the difference processes do to brain activity.

I would argue that I'm actually more myself when I'm triggered and lashing out - because it's the only time I'm not overthinking everything that I say and do

I feel like I commented under one of your recent videos about being highly triggered by certain people, losing my natural calm, and finding myself not being able to stay grounded. And tada here is a vid on getting triggered! 😊😊❤❤

Somatic processing seems to be the new ‘buzz phrase’ amongst healers. Thanks so much for explaining so well what it is 👌

I feel like all this has deep resonances with something Suzanne Guerlac says in her reading of the philosopher Henri Bergson: "To become 'effective' (agissante) (TS 78/1040) an idea must be able to take hold affectively, thereby creating a desire for its own realization." Thank you Thais for another fantastic post!!

Wonderful subject! I always love learning more about emotions and feelings. Also, I think is important to learn how to transmute emotions at the body level. Andrew Kenneth Fretwell in his book, Emotional Alchemy the Love and Freedom Hidden within Painful Feelings teaches how to do that. Here is a quote: “Emotional Alchemy allows us to turn pain into wisdom, fear into courage, and sadness into compassion.’’
